The Snubulator: MTV Video Music Awards 2010 Edition

So, yesterday, the nominees for the 2010 VMAs were announced, and while some got some very good news, others didn't. In fact, some of the biggest videos of the year were completely ignored.

So, it's time to throw them in the Snubulator and see if they really got snubbed.

Christina Aguilera - Not Myself Tonight

It was definitely one of the most talked about videos of the year, but for all the wrong reasons. It was virtually panned by everyone, and only increased the volume of those cruel "Xeroxtina" nicknames. No one was here for another "Dirrty". Plus, the single itself flopped pretty badly, and the album has virtually been forgotten.

SNUBULATOR SAYS: Sorry, Xtina, but the snub was deserved. Better luck next album!

Rihanna - Rude Boy, Russian Roulette, and/or Hard

Rihanna is definitely one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and she was particularly visual with her music video output this year. "Russian Roulette" was dark and twisted, "Hard" was full-on military glam, and "Rude Boy" was colorful Island fun. So, what's with the pathetic nomination for "Best Editing"? If anything, "Russian Roulette" should've scored a nomination for Best Female Video. And while "Rude Boy" was the best video of the year, it could've scored a best pop nod. I mean, it went #1 for five weeks. Rihanna's videography deserved recognition, and with the 13-18 nods that Gaga received, MTV could've spared one of those to Rihanna.

SNUBULATOR SAYS: SNUB, SNUB, SNUB! MTV really screwed her over this year.

Justin Bieber - Baby

Now, I'm not the biggest fan of Bieber, and I'm pretty sure his fanbase might be a little too crazy about him, but even I was surprised by his sole nod for "Baby". I'm pretty sure I was annoyed by the whole bowling party (are you 10?), but it was a pretty big hit and it broke him into the mainstream. That said, I'm glad it wasn't in the Video of the Year category, because I know he would win, solely because of the "Beliebers".
SNUBULATOR SAYS: Some snubbage detected. Don't worry though, Beliebers. He'll take BNA easy

Black Eyed Peas - Every video from THE E.N.D.

What did will.i.am and co. do? They weren't nominated last year, and now this year they've been snubbed. Seriously, though. I figured the epic "Imma Be Rocking That Body" would've landed at least something, but no. This goes beyond snub. This reeks of an MTV ban
SNUBULATOR SAYS: Out of control SNUBBING!

Miley Cyrus - Can't Be Tamed

Her single underperformed, her album is flopping, and her new image is killing her future career prospects. That all said, the whole bird in a cage thing was inspired. It deserved at least a technical award
     SNUBULATOR SAYS: Snub.

Lady Gaga - Alejandro

Yes. I know. EIGHTEEN nominations. But, didn't "Alejandro" deserve a few for it's German-esque cinematography and visceral imagery. Ummm.....yay "Bad Romance"!
    SNUBULATOR SAYS: Nope.

Shakira - She Wolf

Come on, MTV! "She Wolf" was easily the coolest, sexiest videos of the last twelve months! Did you see her in that cage? I didn't even know people could bend like that! It deserved a nomination, at least for Best Choreography, damn!
SNUBULATOR SAYS: There is some sexy snubbage occurring here.

Britney Spears - 3

The third #1 single of her career deserved some credit, right? I mean, she's dancing, looking really pretty, some more dancing....okay, let's be honest. The original version (not the director's cut, that's a different story) was simple at best, and lazy at worst. However, her crown for Queen of MTV is left untarnished by this misstep.
     SNUBULATOR SAYS: Nope, not really.

Checking the videos out, do you think the Snubulator was right? Which videos do you think got snubbed? Leave comments below!

Lady Gaga Owns 2010 MTV Video Music Awards with EIGHTEEN Nominations

hp_tune-in_300x140.jpg

Pop behemoth Lady Gaga has proven why she is the new queen of music videos.

Today, the MTV Video Music Award nominations were announced, and Gaga is nominated no less than 18 times for her videos "Bad Romance", "Telephone", and her feature on Beyoncé's "Video Phone". She is nominated for virtually every award she is eligible, including Video of the Year twice. In fact, she is double nominated in five other categories, and triple nominated for Best Choreography. A big nomination surprise comes from Florence + The Machine, who landed a slot in the Video of the Year category for "Dog Days Are Over". Rihanna is majorly snubbed this year, only being nominated for Best Editing for "Rude Boy".

Michael Jackson's "This Is It" Dazzles The VMAs

Michael_Jackson's_This_Is_It_Poster.JPG.jpg

At last night's VMAs, the trailer for the "This is It" concert documentary closed a show that was warmly dedicated to Michael. There couldn't have been a better ending, because that 2-minute trailer was cold, hard evidence of Michael's dominance of popular music. Even at the age of 50, he appeared as agile and clean in his movements as ever. Had he lived, Michael would have put on the best stage show ever, with special 3D videos, elaborate sets, and the exceptional dance routines of songs like "Smooth Criminal".

For a man who, through the eyes of the media, didn't appear to have a coherent bone is his body, Michael was surprisingly alert and focused. In the trailer, besides his performance, you can see how he takes control of his own output. He's basically directing the show himself, with a little help from past choreographer Kenny Ortega.

The most promising aspect of the trailer and the movie is the promised personal element. The movie claims that it is a Michael we've never seen before. Actually, that's not true. Michael in the trailer is seen smiling and laughing, which we've seen on more than one occasion. It's just that we've never really paid attention. We all were so caught up in Michael Jackson's oddities that we never truly regarded him, like Madonna put so eloquently last night, as a human being, capable of laughter and happiness.

That is what this movie is about, more so than the concert that never was. "This Is It" is a reminder of two facts. Fact one: Michael Jackson was, and always will be, the King of Pop. Fact two: Michael Jackson was a human being. Both facts seem to have been lost in the last few years leading up to and in the aftermath of his death. However, I have a good feeling that this movie will set those two facts in the stones of the pop canon.

Me to MTV: Ban Kanye West From Future VMAs, Now!

I'll have full coverage of the VMAs later today, but I had to speak on what Kanye West did to Taylor Swift as she accepted the Best Female Video award.

If you have no clue what I am talking about, here is what happened: Taylor Swift won Best Female Video over Beyonce, who was expected to take the award home. As Taylor, in disbelief herself, gave her speech, Kanye came up on stage, took the mic from her and said that Beyonce had the best video. Everyone in the audience, including Beyonce, was absolutely mortified.

I wish I could say that this was anomaly in basic human decency, but alas, Kanye has a record for being absolutely tasteless and rude. In fact, it's the third time that he has pulled something like this at an MTV awards show.

And this should be his last.

MTV, please teach this A-level jerk a lesson and ban him from future VMA ceremonies. I don't care if he releases the next Thriller. What he, a grown man, did to a freaking 19-year old was inexcusable (by the way, his blog apology is utter BS). As much satisfaction it would give me to see something similar happen to him, I would rather he not attend at all. Clearly, he doesn't know how to behave.

VMA 2009: Janet's Tribute To Include "Scream"; Joe and Jermaine Attending

a29545427-56ff13d1ab8bce66a.jpg

Perez Hilton has reported exclusively on details involving the Jackson family at the VMAs tonight.

According to his sources, both Jermaine (who just scrapped plans for a September MJ tribute concert in Austria) and Joe Jackson will be attending the show.

Janet will be the show's opener, performing a very special tribute to her brother. A picture taken from the set shows Michael on a video screen from his music video "Scream", which he recorded with Janet. Also on the bill is "Smooth Criminal" and other MJ classics.

Another rumor circulating is that Madonna will be presenting Janet's performance. It has been confirmed that she will attend.

This is gearing up to be the best VMAs in five years, especially if the MJ tribute is as good as they're saying.

The VMAs will air at 9pm EST.

MTV's MJ Tribute: Raining Gloves and Janet Jackson

On the day the world lost Michael Jackson, MTV suddenly remembered how they became the cultural touchstone they are today and paid immediate homage to the King of Pop. In an age where a music video channel spins reality shows nearly every minute, it was both refreshing and comforting to see MJ classics such as "Billie Jean", "Beat It", and "Black or White" on the air, in primetime, no less.

Three months later, MTV is showing their respect for Michael by dedicating a portion of the Video Music Awards, if not the whole show, to him. Despite the stagnant nature of recent VMA ceremonies, I knew that the definitive Michael Jackson tribute would come from them, especially after the disaster that was the BET Awards.

If the latest information and promo is to be believed, then they have proved me right.

MTV revealed this past week that Janet Jackson, Michael's little sister and pop icon in her own right, would helm the opening tribute. She's reportedly working with the best dancers in the industry, including MJ friend Wade Robson, to craft this performance.

On top of that, MTV released a surprisingly touching promo for the tribute, featuring raining silver gloves, Michael's most famous trademark.

If done right, and I am sure it will be, this could rank among one of the best ceremonies in VMA history.

The MTV Video Music Awards airs this Sunday, Spetember 13th, at 9pm EST.

Jonas Brothers Not Offended By Russell Brand VMA Jokes

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45000000/jpg/_45000852_ap_jonas466.jpg

OK, its official, the Jonas Brothers are classier than Jordin Sparks. They also have better senses of humor, too.

During an interview with the BBC to promote Camp Rock in the UK, the trio were asked about Russell Brand's jokes about their promise rings during the VMAs.

What did they say?

Kevin: "I think he focused on certain things and didn't move off of them. People's attention spans in America need more than that...We had a lot of friends there and everybody's so nice. We had a good time."

Nick: "For us it's cool to see that he recognises we are gentleman...I think he did a good job. We saw him on Conan O'Brien and thought he was hilarious.:

So, there you go. They have senses of humor, and they are not rude, bratty bleeps.

Get it yet, Jordin? (For fans of hers, I will get over my dislike of her in a few days, so sorry)

Me to Jonas Brothers: Remain Silent, Remain Strong

Pop star Jordin Sparks showed her true, bitchy colors last night at the VMAs last night when she "defended" promise rings against the jokes made by host Russell Brand. Before introducing T.I., Jordin said, "It's not bad to waer promise rings because not everyone, guy or girl, wants to be sluts."

Um, excuse me?

The butt of said jokes were the Jonas Brothers, the teen pop sensations who recently sold 1/2 million copies of their album A Little Bit Longer. The musical brothers are wearers of the promise ring, which signifies a person's promise to God to remain virgins until matrimony. Despite revealing in a magazine interview, they haven't made it a prominent part of their selves, a smart decision in my opinion. That didn't stop host Brand from joking about it quite crudely. One joke mentioned the Jonases genitals, and there is enough mind soap in the world to erase that statement. Despite the roasting, the brothers remained quiet, and they didn't look particularly offended (Kevin actually looked slightly amused). If only Jordin exercised the same restraint.

The truth is, the Jonas Brothers and other famous promise ring-wearers are celebrities. This means that their lives up for discussion, whether its love, hate, or parody. Considering their promise rings are a known fact about them (and one of the only interesting things about them), its pretty much fair game. Yes, his jokes were crass, but Jordin's comments were insulting to the majority of the population, as well as being petty, bitchy, and judgmental. I would like to think the Jonas Brothers are not like her, so what should they say in response?

Nothing.

The saying goes, "your silence is your strength". They may be hurt or embarrassed, but at the end of the day, it was a joke. I think they should exhibit the class I'm sure their parents bestowed on them and remain silent on the issue. It will be better in the long run.

The 2008 VMAs: Give It Up, MTV

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1409/1416597278_cdf87b0325.jpgLast night, I sat down to watch the 25th annual MTV Video Music Awards, assuming that it couldn't be as disastrous as it was last year. I mean, a healthier-looking Britney was supposed to appear to do something, and the concept wasn't terrible.

By 11:18, I realized something. The VMAs are officially DEAD.

To be fair, nothing could've been as terrible as last year, with the weird hotel performances and the career-killing Britney performance and the overall crapiness. But this year was one thing that the VMAs never really were: dull.

Britney Spears' big return was a big farce. All she did was film a little skit with Jonah Hill from Superbad fame and then actually open the show. Um, what? Where's Britney? This is the same girl who stripped off a suit into a near-nude outfit, wore a snake as a accessory, and made out with the Queen of Pop, and this is all they could come up for her?

Unlike her humiliation last year, Britney was completely lucid, and robotic. Apparently, Britney has to be high to be interesting. Either way, she won big tonight, taking home her first awards ever, including Video of the Year. It's kinda sad that she won for a sucky video, when she was nominated before for good ones like "Oops! I Did It Again".

Despite what 3/4 of America thinks, Russell Brand actually wasn't terrible. In fact, he had some good moments, with some of the political jokes. He also delivered some extremely awkward and cringeworthy moments, such as his Jonas Brothers promise ring jokes. I thouqght a few of them were funny, the glaring exception being the genital joke, but apparently Russell Brand's sex humor didn't ring true with the guests, one in particular. Jordin Sparks took the host head-on with a comment that may be construed as either bratty or brilliant: "It's not bad to wear promise rings, because not everyone, guy or girl, wants to be sluts".

I thought it was bratty.

No offense to the American Idol star (albeit one of the least successful ones), but this is the VMAs. Sure, the JB jokes weren't very tasteful, but the VMAs were never about taste. It was about crazy antics and sex and stuff like that. The first huge moment of the show was Madonna rolling around on the floor in a wedding dress, for heaven's sake. If jokes about sex are so uncomfortable for you, then you are attending the wrong show.

The same can be said for the rest of the crowd. Never before have I seen such a dead, uninteresting crowd of people. Apparently, the VMA audience was filled with conservative, Jonas-loving people. Wrong crowd.

The performances were a bit better. Lil' Wayne did a three part performance featuring T-Pain and surprise guest Leona Lewis (do I see a collaboration coming up?) and it was actually pretty good. I could've lived if he pulled pants up enough so it wasn't hanging off his butt, but what can you do? He did good. Pink performed her new song "So What", which was the best of the night. I liked all of the pyro stuff, and she looked and sounded fantastic. Only one other person looked better: Christina Aguilera. She looked hot (and like Lady GaGa), really hot, but for some reason, she decided to lipsync, something more expected of her counterpart. Maybe she was trying to prove that she can lipsync and perform better than Britney. She succeeded.

The show's biggest talking talking point, the Jonas Brothers, performed their new single "Love Bug", on the same stoop from Sesame Street. It probably would've been better if we had a cameo from Oscar in his garbage can (symbolism, anyone?). The song soon broke into the "rock" ending, where they performed on a traditional stage with a bunch for screaming crazies fans. Again, they showed how badly the suck as singers, with their whining and screeching. Still, apparently everyone's head is shoved up their you-know-what, so I guess it was a success. Rihanna looked great, but also suffered from some vocal issues. I didn't even care about Kanye's closing performance.

To take away from the rock-and-roll past of the VMAs, MTV was sure to employ some of the biggest teen stars around. Remember Britney, Christina? Now its Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Drake Bell, and Josh Peck. OK, is this the VMAs or the Kids Choice Awards? Wherer were all the interesting, fun celebrities? Instead, we get Chace Crawford (you could've at least gotten Blake Lively damnit) and Lauren Conrad.

The VMAs were once the tastemakers in pop culture, but for another year in a row, MTV showed how out-of-touch they really are. They promised music? Except for Pink, it wasn't very impressive. Hell, the people performing in the corner with DJ AM should've been on the main stage (Katy Perry, The Ting Tings, LL Cool J). They promised mayhem? Um, Russell tried, but the crowd was either so dead or so pristine that they weren't buying it.

All in all, the VMAs was a flop. Its a million times better than the last two or so years, but that's nothing much. MTV should just admit defeat; they are no longer Music Television. They don't play music anymore, so why should they host a video award show? Plus, the show that had such a history of fun insanity was so Disney last night that you would think that Mickey Mouse produced it (Brand was an oversight).

It's quite ironic that the 25th anniversary of the show, devoid of all kinds of history except for Katy Perry performing "Like a Virgin" in the corner, signaled the eventual end of one of the most exciting programs on television.

As someone said on a forum before, if the Grammys are more interesting than the VMAs, its over.

Britney Spears and Russell Brand's VMA Commercial

Britney's back!

Looking healthy and more like the real Britney compared to last year, she and VMA host Russell Brand star in a pair of fun commercials, below. (BTW, the elephant there represents the "elephant in the room". If you know Britney's VMA history, you should know what that is).

MTV Creates Best UK Video VMA, Leona and Duffy Among Nominees

MTV has noticed the large stream of talented British artists, and in an effort to reward them for their talents, they have created the "Best UK Video" award at this year's VMAs.

The nominees are Coldplay's "Violet Hill", Duffy's "Mercy", Estelle's "American Boy", Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love", and the Ting Tings' "Shut Up and Let Me Go".

Now, I know I'm biased, but Leona NEEDS to win this category!

The award is up for public vote, so don't forget to vote for who you think should win (LEONA!!!)

Greatest Scenes from the VMAs: Britney in 2000

No matter what age or gender, the day after the 2000 VMAs, you were talking about one person.

Britney Spears.

Her best performance on the VMAs had to be 2000, at the height of her popularity. She opened her set with a cover of the Rolling Stones classic "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". She was sitting in a chair, dressed in a glittery suit, singing live (shockingly). She then walked down the steps slowly, singing, and stopped at the bottom. That's when things got interesting. As she danced onto the stage, still singing live, she began to strip off the suit, leaving only flesh-colored top and pants with some glitter, leaving the illusion that she was naked, at least from far away. That's when she went into lipsyncing her hit "Oops! I Did It Again". I guess we could forgive her for that since she was a) half-naked and b) dancing her hot ass off.

That performance truly set the bar for VMA performances. The watercooler the next day was crowded with people either turned on by the sexy performance or outraged because their teen daughters looked up to Britney and could possibly emulate their star's dress code. Either way, it was a performance to go down in the record books.

Now, if only Brit could get together now....

Greatest Scenes from the VMAs: Mariah vs. Whitney in 1998

Remember when the VMAs were actually cool?

In honor of this year's VMAs, I am doing a special "Greatest Scenes" series from VMA's glorious past!

Back in 1998, Mariah and Whitney played with their rumored feud when they presented the Best Male Video award. They came out in matching brown dresses, and then proceeded to outdo each other in the "pulling parts off" contest. What you unfortunately don't see in the video is when that happens. The best part was when Mariah pulled off the fabric to reveal her world-famous legs with the instantly quotable line "Try it on me"! Sorry, Whit, but Mariah got you beat on this one!
