Song Review: David Archuleta's "Crush"

On NY's Z100 this morning, American Idol runner-up David Archuleta premiered his new single "Crush" for the first time ever on radio. It turns out, the song was just finished last night (which is probably why the radio adds date was pushed back) so not even Archuleta heard the final version.

I was surprised by how much I liked it. I mean with title like "Crush", the corniest concepts come to mind. Of course, his voice sounds phenomenal recorded, so that was never the problem. The production must have been done by Stargate, because it sounds a lot like their previous work, especially Chris Brown's "With You". Nevertheless, it sounds really good. The lyrics are also pretty good, and easily relatable. Everyone has had that big crush on someone, so its an easy subject to write a song about. However, this song may be one of the best I have heard about the subject (Mandy Moore's was terrible). I'm sure everyone thought Archuleta would have the corny 1st single while Cook would have the awesome one. Yeah, try reversing that a bit.

I wouldn't call "Crush" awesome, but its definitely a good start for one of Idol's best contestants ever. Radio will be spinning this all fall, so don't be surprised when you hear Archie on your radio soon. Congrats to him. Check out the song below:

David Archuleta - Crush

Rating: 7.5/10

UPDATE (AS OF 7:00 PM): David Archuleta's single "Crush" has an iTunes release date of September 2nd.

Woke up early today and listened to David's new song online. I liked it very much the first time I listened, but have since listened to it 3 more times, and now it's official...I love it! Of course it is a much "younger" song than I am used to hearing him sing (I did know that would be the case)...but it is, in my opinion, by no means "typical". Because of the title I had wondered whether it might be completely directed at just teenage girls, but now that I've heard it several times, no worries there. The lyrics can not help but bring to mind emotions that are so universal, and David's amazing vocals give the whole song that "something special". As always he has delivered in amazing fashion, and I can not be happier for him! Can not wait to hear more in November! Congratulations David!

Nice review! I personally loved it..I just couldn't stop thinking about it when it played this morning in my car. It helped remind me about David and that he WAS making an album.

Oh I looked it up. "Crush" was produced by Emanuel Kiriakou and written by him, Jess Cates, and Dave Hodges.

I think it was amazing.....I can't stop listening to it. It is stuck in my head forever and I don't mind one little bit. I didn't know what to expect but I don't really think I could have imagined how fantastic it really is...David you are going to be a huge star and it couldn't happen to a more talented, sweet, adorable, genuine guy.
