Download of the Day 1/1/11: More by Usher

Last year (can't be I'm already saying that), Usher made a huge comeback with his album Raymond v. Raymond. He scored massive sales and one of the biggest hits of 2010 in "OMG". Yet, there was considerable criticism about Usher's musical direction towards a dance-pop sound, accusing him of selling out to get a hit.

Usher wants "more" for the new year
His latest single choice, a remix of "More", won't quell his critics in any way. Remixed by Gaga's top guy RedOne for pop radio release, this song couldn't be more Europop dance if it tried. It basically sounds like it was birthed on the floor of a sweaty club in Ibiza, with pumping synths and sharp buzzing beats. The song works a lot better as a club track than you would expect, though. There is an awesome sense of intensity, aided by the originally dull lyrics about "wanting more". In fact, Usher's lyrics and vocals benefit greatly by this electro makeover. The original, while a highlight of Raymond v. Raymond, needed an energy boost, and when you compare it to RedOne's reworking, the difference is startling. Listening to the original after the remix is actually a bit of a letdown.

Usher's switch to more dance-oriented pop music is a conscious one; it is doing exceptionally well on radio at the moment, Unlike other artists, though, Usher retains his personality and style in his genre switch, and uses the different sound to his advantage. I would not consider Usher a sell-out at all.

I would consider him versatile, and in today's ever-changing pop landscape, that is a treasured adjective.

Looking Back at... 2010: The Comebacks

It's that time of year again. It's time to look back at all of the good, the bad, and the absolutely ridiculous of the past year. While you all have been voting for your favorites in the BWU Awards 2010, I have sifted through the year in, everything, to find what's worthy of notice.

So, without further ado, here are the biggest comebacks of 2010!

5. Enrique Iglesias - He blew up during the Latin Invasion of the late 90's, but his career fizzled out at the turn of the new millennium, with his last hit being 2001's "Hero". Thanks to the Gaga-bred dance-pop explosion this year, the Latin lover caught an epic second wind. "I Like It", the first single off his latest album Euphoria, reached the top 10 of many countries, including the United States, where it reached #4. His next single, "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)", is already burning its way up the iTunes chart, guaranteeing him success well into 2011. I guess we missed the mole more than we thought.

4. Usher - The King of R&B returned to his throne this year with very successful album Raymond v. Raymond, which spawned the ubiquitous smash "OMG", which #1 on the charts. He also celebrated the success of his protege Justin Bieber, who just won Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards. After the disappointment that was 2008's Here I Stand, 2010 was proof that Usher was the premier male pop star of the moment. Now if only he would get that haircut..

Affection: The embroidered blouse chosen by Miss Middleton for this shot was still available on the shelves yesterday3. The British Royal Family - Let's be honest: the thirteen years since the passing of Princess Diana have been relatively uneventful. Sure, Charles married Camilla, and Harry became the troublemaker after bouts with swastika costumes and pot, but compared to the years of Diana, it's been quiet. That changed when Prince William, the second in line to the throne, announced that he would finally be marrying his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton. Almost instantaneously, the world went absolutely bonkers over the engagement. The world's media plastered them across the front pages, speculating on everything from the wedding date to Kate's future role. Her status as a future pop culture figure has already been set; she was featured on Barbra Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People and the dresses she's worn in public have become instant best-sellers. The world, who probably didn't care less about the Windsors two months ago, now wait with baited breath over the April nuptials of the future King and Queen.

2. Rihanna - OK, so it's not really that much of a comeback, but Rihanna definitely regained lost ground on the pop landscape this past year. The Bajan beauty featured on the biggest record of 2010, Eminem's "Love The Way You Lie", and scored two #1 hits of her own with "Only Girl (In The World)" and "What's My Name". Her new album Loud gave her the highest first week sales of her career, although she hasn't been able to get that coveted #1 spot, yet. Also, she has fans cracking up with her witty, shady comments on Twitter and guessing about her love life, in a good way. It's nice to see that she's moved past the drama of last year.

1. Kanye West - He's a douchebag. He's an asshole. He's a scumbag. He's one of the most provocative musical artists on the past decade. Of course, he knows all of this. After the Taylor Swift debacle last year, it seemed like Kanye might have finally pushed the public too far. Well, being Kanye, he took the criticism and unleashed one of the most critically lauded records in recent memory, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Part-ego trip and part masterstroke, Kanye re-worked the conventions of rap and pop with impressive critical and commercial results. Yes, he's still got his antics (replacing his bottom row of teeth with diamonds, the Today Show interview disaster), but no matter what he does, we still have love for the college dropout. So let's have a toast for Kanye, who kept us on our toes in 2010.

Usher MegaPost: New Single on iTunes, Video for "There Goes My Baby" and More!

Today is a pretty big day for R&B superstar Usher.

Just four days after premiering it on his website, Usher has released "DJ's Got Us Fallin' In Love" on iTunes. The single, featuring Pitbull, is first off of his upcoming EP Versus and is already in the Top 50 of the iTunes Songs chart. Speaking of new singles, Usher won't be leaving his R&B fans hungry for new music: "Hot Tottie" will be the song released to urban radio on August 9th.

Usher's current urban single is "There Goes My Baby", and to promote it, he has finally released the music video for it today on VEVO. The clip shows Usher with his woman frolicking in and around a house on the hill, sometimes shirtless. It's basically a lite version of his steamy "Trading Places" video.

New Music Alert: "DJ's Got Us Fallin' In Love" by Usher featuring Pitbull

Today, R&B superstar Usher officially released "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love", the lead single from his upcoming EP Versus. The single features rapper Pitbull, and follows the electropop style of his massive #1 single "OMG". It's quite ironic that Usher is releasing another pop song, after he reportedly bashed British artists like Jay Sean and Taio Cruz for watering down the R&B genre with their pop hybrids.

Usher's purported hypocrisy doesn't take away from the imminent pop smash that this song is. With its pulsing, rave-style electro beats and Usher's powerful vocals, "DJ's Got Us Fallin' In Love" has got late summer dancefloor filler written all over it. Pitbull, who nearly stole the show on Enrique Iglesias' hit "I Like It", is ultimately relegated to the backburner against the bigger popstar, even with his quickfire verses. Usher proves that, even when hopping on the dance-pop bandwagon, he still reigns as a king among his fellow artists.

Usher To Release New EP Next Month; New Single Out TODAY

http://phreshdelivery.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/usher.jpgR&B king Usher has announced the release of a new record, just months after his latest effort Raymond v. Raymond.

Versus, an extended play in the vein of Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster, will be released on August 24th. Usher, on his website, calls the release the "final chapter" of Raymond v. Raymond, which was released in March. The first single from the EP will be "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love", an electropop number featuring rapper Pitbull. While the single will hit radio tomorrow, it has leaked online today (my review will come later). The EP will be released alongside the deluxe edition of Raymond v. Raymond, which combine both records for a total of 22 songs.

Usher isn't the first artist to release an EP alongside an album, especially lately. Gaga did it with The Fame Monster, Justin Bieber split his My World album into two different records, and Rihanna and the Black Eyed Peas are both reportedly prepping similar re-releases.

Will you be picking up the album?

Will Michael Jackson's Throne Ever Be Occupied Again? The Top Four Contenders

Does the King have a successor?
There is simply no question that Michael Jackson is and always will be the definitive King of Pop.

However, every great king has a successor.

While MJ's achievements may never, ever, be duplicated in history, pop music does need a visionary artist to inspire the future generations. So, looking at the current pop landscape, here are the five most likely princes who will aim for the difficult-to-reach throne.

Usher
Usher performed with Michael at his 30th Anniversary celebration concert (that I attended), sang at his memorial service and at the Grammys tribute earlier this year. That's a pretty impressive apprenticeship. Talk about his potential successor started around the release of 2004's Confessions, which was critically lauded and spawned four #1 hits (one less than Michael's Bad). In his career, he's hit the top spot with nine singles, making him one of the most successful artists in US chart history. Confessions sold over 10 million copies and is one of the last Diamond certified albums. He's already beginning to prep the next generation, mentoring teen sensation Justin Bieber. King of Pop? It could happen.

Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake, in the mid-2000's, was considered Usher's biggest rival to the throne. Originally a child star (like Michael), he grew up into a certified megastar (sort of like Michael). His album FutureSex/LoveSounds was a global smash, spawning three number-one hits, including his signature "SexyBack". He also had the privilege of performing with MJ at the 2001 VMAs with NSYNC. Oh yeah, that group. He was kind of successful with them too, to the tune of 56 million records sold worldwide, and two Diamond albums. Unfortunately, he's been cooling his heels on the solo front, deciding to either feature on other songs or play golf, resulting in him slipping a bit in his bid for a place in pop royalty. King of Pop? When he gets his butt back in the studio, possible.

Chris Brown
Chris Brown and Michael Jackson have a lot of common, on the personal front. Both were drenched in terrible scandal. Michael had the child molestation allegations, while Brown physically abused pop princess Rihanna. Despite their troubles, they maintained a loyal fanbase. However, the rest of the world sort of fell off with them. For a while there, it looked like Chris might follow MJ's footsteps (in another way). He is one of, if not the, best dancers in pop music. He crafted some inescapable pop hits. Too bad his scandal hit him at an age where he still suffered from a sense of entitlement and immaturity, resulting in terrible PR choices that tarnished his image. Now, he's recording music videos for an underground mix tape with Young Money rapper. How the could've-been mighty have fallen. King of Pop? Doubtful, but anything can happen.

Kanye West
I balked at rumors circulating that Kanye West declared himself the new King of Pop. It turned out to be not true, but it got me thinking. Yes, his ego is the size of China, but then, so was Michael's. Either that, or he thought floating big statues of himself down European rivers in 1995 was a charity mission. While I don't really want to boost his ego, Kanye's success and status as one of music's greatest minds can't be challenged. His last album, 808's and Heartbreak, set a new pop standard, and was critically lauded. He's landed atop the pop charts twice, and four more times in the top 5. And let's not forget when he thrashed 50 Cent in that first week sales battle in 2007, selling just shy of a million. With his new album due in September, we'll see if those fake boasts hold any weight. King of Pop? He might think so.

Ne-Yo
Ne-Yo was tapped by the King of Pop to help write what would have been a new album. No one else here can claim that. Of course, it would not come to pass, but Ne-Yo has made it a goal of his to emulate his biggest idol. While his personal chart achievements don't shine as bright as the others on this list, that doesn't put him out of the running. He does have his own #1 hit, while he has written some of the biggest hits of the last decade for some of the biggest artists of the decade. He also happens to be the complete package; singer, dancer, songwriter, all things MJ excelled at. His new album Libra Scale is out in September, we'll see then if that complete package can stand the test of time. King of Pop? Definitely some more time needed.

Anyone you think I forgot, or will there ever be someone that could rule pop like Michael did? Share your thoughts.

Usher's Raymond vs. Raymond Sells 329K In First Week

File:Usher1.jpg

R&B superstar Usher is back on top.

His latest effort, Raymond vs. Raymond has sold 329,000 copies in its first week of release, giving his third straight #1 album in the United States. His last album, Here I Stand, sold 443,000 copies in its debut week, off the back of the #1 single "Love In This Club". His protege Justin Bieber is right behind him, increasing his sales to around 290,000 copies from his debut last week.

In other related chart news, Usher currently has two songs in the top 40 of the Hot 100. "OMG" debuts at #14, thanks to an appearance on American Idol catapulting it into the iTunes top 10. "Hey Daddy (Daddy's Home)" is sitting at #25.

Download of the Day 4/03: "OMG" by Usher

Usher's new single

Oh my gosh! Usher is back!

After the disappointment of Here I Stand and the lukewarm reception of his last few singles, R&B superstar Usher has released a single that will easily return him to the top. "OMG" is the first international single from Raymond vs. Raymond and, despite the release of "Hey Daddy", the single is burning up iTunes in the United States. That's because (alongside his awesome performance on American Idol) "OMG" is the first legitimate R&B club banger of the year, and surely his best since 2004's epic "Yeah!". The song features Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am, which may be where the techno slant comes from. It's following a trend, but "OMG" has a surprising "grown and sexy" feel to it that won't make his older fans feel ridiculous listening to it. That is comforting, even refreshing, considering his very public association with teen star Justin Bieber, and the overall state of R&B these days.

This song is the perfect re-introduction of Usher to the global pop stage, and it also serves as a reminder that, amongst all of the pretenders to the throne, he is the premier male in pop music right now.

Usher Sacks Entire Management For Mom

“Moving Mountains” coverRemember my post about R&B singer Usher's fury with Benny Medina over his album sales?

Well, the inevitable has happened.

Usher, in a really smart move, has dropped his entire management team at Benny's Handprint Entertainment in favor for his mom's J-Pat Entertainment.

The decision to bring his mama back into the fold comes after he was reportedly furious that his album was outsold by Lil Wayne. While his album currently stands at around 940,000 sold, Lil Wayne has sold over 2 million in only two months. The numbers are even more embarrassing considering his last effort, Confessions, sold almost 10 million in 2004. Its not just albums. His second single, "Moving Mountains", is on the verge of flopping, with tepid radio play and disappointing sales (he is being outsold on iTunes by, among many more, Lil' Wayne, Leona Lewis, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Miley Cyrus, Shwayze, Madonna, Jonas Brothers, Katy Perry, and The Game).

I'm sure he's hoping his mother can kiss the ginormous boo-boo his career has, but I think it might be too little too late (since the album sucks).
