Some Notes About... Lady Gaga and Beyonce's "Telephone"

Gaga and Beyonce as murderesses in the 9-minute long "Telephone"

Three months after its announcement as the official second single of the pop epic "The Fame Monster", the highly-anticipated video for Lady Gaga and Beyonce's "Telephone" was released in a double world premiere on E! and VEVO. After three days of salivating over this "true pop event" (as Gaga called it), here are some important things to take away...

1. Comparing it to "Bad Romance" is both pointless and inaccurate
People across the Internet have been using "Bad Romance" as an excuse to blast "Telephone" as a failure. The only problem with this logic is that there are two very different videos. "Bad Romance" was a serious, dramatic, layered video (I mean, Russian sex trafficking?). "Telephone" is clearly a parody of both pop culture and the old western films. Gaga and Bey are having a laugh; you should be too.

1b. That being said...
This video, as enjoyable as it is (take away sleep, I have watched this video non-stop, in virtually setting possible at Trinity College), is not better than "Bad Romance". To be honest, I'm not sure Gaga will be able to top that one anytime soon, and that's not a bad thing. 

2. Gaga loves her product placement
If you thought "Bad Romance" had too much, you'll be shell-shocked by "Telephone". Everything from Diet Coke to Miracle Whip featured a cameo in this video. While it could borderline on irritating, Gaga's use of them all is inventive and hilarious. If I'm being honest, I preferred those cameos to Tyrese Gibson's.

3. Beyonce has been revitalized through this video
Yes, Beyonce is untouchable in many areas of popular music. But thank the Gods for Gaga, because she unveiled as a side of the diva we haven't really seen before: her wacky side. Assuming it was a one-off, Beyonce let loose and clearly had fun with the crazy costumes, dramatic makeup, and the careless murder of harmless diners. It was a joy to watch.

4. "Telephone" is 100 times better than "Video Phone"
Let me take it a step further: Gaga should direct all of Beyonce's videos from now on.

5. The video was smidgen too long
While I nearly died at the prospect of a 10 minute long music video from a post-"Bad Romance" Gaga, the actuality was a bit tiring. I'm sure I'll love the eventual TV edit a lot more (with less prison scenes in particular).

6. The sequel to this video is "Alejandro"
Why? "To be continued"  and it has been confirmed. Here's to hoping for another Gagonce collaboration soon (as in not another freakin' four months).

7. The Gaga/Beyonce diner dance sequence is the best dance sequence I have seen in years
Where else would you see these two pop titans dancing amongst dead people? Epic.

8. Alongside "Bad Romance", Gaga has revived the art of music videos
Sometime after Madonna went British and Michael donned devil ears calling Tommy Mottola evil, the thought disappeared from music videos. Most of them just featured a cheap setting with some pretty good dancing. Thanks to Lady Gaga's headline-grabbing, partially banned music videos, there is a legitimate interest in music videos again. So note to other pop stars: step your game up.

9. "Telephone" is currently, and will continue to be, the best music video of the year
Unless Gaga pulls some next level stuff with "Alejandro" (and hopefully "Dance in the Dark")

10. GAGA AND BEYONCE ATE FROM THE SAME HONEY BUN!!!

Am I the only one totally freaking out/loving this? I mean, it's the closest thing we'll ever get to a Beyonce/Gaga makeout session (unless Gaga pulls some next level stuff on "Alejandro")

 

Video of the Week: Rihanna's Shy Ronnie SNL Skit

Probably my favorite SNL Digital Short ever, Rihanna and rapper "Shy Ronnie" (played Adam Samberg) try and instill some musical knowledge into some kids, with some hilariously mixed results.

While I'm sure the gag was Shy Ronnie exploding with skills when Rihanna leaves the classroom, but Rihanna's deadpan singing on the hook is freaking hilarious. My favorite line? "This beat cost a lot of money", an allusion to the workings of the music industry. Of course, Samberg is amazing too, but the awesomeness all lied with Rihanna.

This is, hands down, one of the cutest things I have ever seen, ever!

In Case You Didn't Know, "Bad Romance" Is The Best Video of the Year

What do bearskin rug capes, ridiculously shaped Alexander McQueen shoes, sex trafficking, murder, the Russian mafia, and bath houses have in common?

Nothing, unless you are watching "Bad Romance", the latest music video from Lady Gaga.

The pop star unveiled the video for her latest single on her website today, after holding its release back one day. The anticipation wasn't for naught, because the video is, without a question, both her best and the best of the entire musical year.

The video features an "innocent" Gaga (hence the wide, anime-style eyes) being kidnapped by white-wearing people, forced to down vodka, and sold into sex slavery sponsored by the Russian mafia. She appears to get her bearings back in the end, as she sets her slavemaster's bed on fire.

With this stunning masterpiece, Gaga has proven herself to be the most creative artist in pop music today. It is the most visually stunning, thought-provoking, and innovate music video of the year, and it most likely ranks in the top 10 videos of the decade. The only other artist I can think of off the top of my head who delivered art like this is the godfather of music videos himself, Michael Jackson.

I cannot think of anyone better to follow in his footsteps.

Video of The Week: Shakira's "She Wolf"

I'm going to be perfectly honest: Shakira's video for her hot new single "She Wolf" wasn't as good as people were expecting.

That said, the stuff she was doing in that damn cage just about gave me a heart attack. Seriously, I could've served as a freakin' flytrap watching the premiere on MTV Thursday night.

For that alone, "She Wolf is the best video of the week (sorry Sugababes).

Although Carrie Underwood doesn't need American Idol, whenever she shows up, she delivers some kind of awesome performance.

Dressed in a coat-dress thing with some fabric connecting her arms, Carrie Underwood rocked the Idol finale singing her latest single "Last Name". Although a bit screechy, she was no doubt awesome (and looked hotter than hell), proving why she is still the real reigning American Idol.

Soap Sud of the Week: Jason Breaks Down to Monica on GH!

It takes a lot to break the impenetrable shell that is Jason "Stone Cold" Morgan. It has to be something tragic, devastating, and guilt-ridden to tear Jason down. That is exactly what happened when his nephew/one-time surrogate son Michael Corinthos was wheeled into the ER. Jason's worst fears for his own child Jake were realized for the 12-year old when sniper Dr. Ian Devlin accidentally shot him instead of his father Sonny. Although appearing strong for Carly's sake, the revelation that Michael would likely not wake up struck the enforcer straight through his heart. Unable to cope on his own, he turned to his often-shunned mother, Monica Quartermaine. The cardiologist, currently sitting pretty in rehab, was a perfect choice for Jason to receive comfort. The two recently reconciled, and for the first time since the accident 13 years ago, Jason felt comfortable with his mom.

When Jason went to see Monica, it seemed like an information relay about Michael's condition. However, Jason quickly folded as he explained her estranged grandson's condition, needing his mom to hold him. After gaining some composure, Jason revealed how he blamed himself for Michael's accident. Monica quickly shot him down, explaining that the choices he made were not malicious. She also gave Jason the relief he needed by forgiving him for taking Michael away from the family, hoping that he would also forgive himself.

Ever since that accident in 1996 that turned Jason Quartermaine into Jason Morgan, he and his rich family were terribly disjointed. Although he came to somewhat tolerate his volatile relatives, it wasn't until they slowly started disappearing did he show a real longing for them. Now that he and Monica have officially buried the hatchet, it seems that the great divide is FINALLY beginning to close.

You've Gotta Be Kidding Me: The Jonas Brothers and HM The Queen???

A lesson from the Jonas Brothers: if you walk randomly through the streets of London, chances are you will bump into Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, without guards or any kind of protection! She will also be reduced to a giddy schoolgirl at your presence!

Mariah Carey on UK's Friday Night Project

I have been waiting for this episode for days.

As I mentioned in a previous post, The Friday Night Project is one of my favorite shows from the UK.  In almost a bit of fate, Mariah Carey appeared on tonight's episode as the guest host! As I hoped, it was absolutely HILARIOUS (for the right reasons)!

Also mentioned before, my favorite segment of the show is the Friday Night News. Mariah was very funny and Alan of course was just genius. Considering all of the diva craziness that's coming out of London, its nice to see that Mariah can have some fun. My only gripe is that she keeps saying "darling" in a really annoying British accent for some reason. It's REALLY ticking me off, and I want her to stop (its making her look and sound crazy). Anyway, Mariah was awesome on the show.

The Princess and the Panorama, Behind The Interview

It was arguably the biggest television interview of all time.

Bigger than any presidential interview, bigger than Oprah's interview with Michael Jackson, bigger than any interview of its kind.

In 1995, Diana, Princess of Wales, was interviewed by Martin Bashir for BBC's Panorama program. Unlike an interview about her charity work, this special program was a no-holds-barred expose on the life of the most famous woman in the world. Never before had there been an interview with so many things at stake.

What she revealed sent shockwaves throughout the world. From her affair with James Hewitt to her belief that her husband at the time, Prince Charles, wasn't fit to be King of England, were bombshells that blew holes through Buckingham Palace. It's without question because of that interview, the Prince and Princess of Wales divorced early the next year.

Now, someone by the screen name of princessdianaislove has put up a special about the interview. It documents all of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the Panorama interview and the ramifications that it held for both the BBC and the monarchy. It is truly a fascinating tale of the tape, so to speak.

It will usually be two videos a week, but I couldn't pass this one up.

Apparently, on the Bulgarian version of American Idol, some woman decided to sing Mariah Carey's Without You. As you can see (and hear, unfortunately), the singer has interpreted the ballad a little bit differently then most would. This is the true VIDEO OF THE WEEK!

Video of the Week (Part 2): Ghost Hunting With Girls Aloud

The part I'm particularly focusing on is the first 1/2 of this video, Part 5 (the other parts are also on YouTube). Whether or not you believe in the supernatural, the first half of this vid is SO funny! Cheryl has got some balls in this one.

BTW, if you didn't notice, only 4 of the 5 girls are there (Nadine didn't want to participate out of fear).
