The BWU Chart: James Morrison Stays At #1, The Veronicas Rocket Into Top 10

The first chart week of 2009 sees James Morrison remaining at the top with his Nelly Furtado duet "Broken Strings". This makes him the first male artist to remain at #1 for a second week. The track staves off an attempt for #1 glory from Bloc Party's "Signs", which remained at #2 this week.

Making the biggest chart jump in history are The Veronicas. The Australian pop duo shot up 30 places from #39 to #9, break the record set by David Archuleta's "Crush", when it moved up from #40 to #11 in August.

The Hot Shot Debut of the week is "Kids" by MGMT, which bows at #25. Re-entering the chart is "I Hate This Part" by the Pussycat Dolls at #22, thanks to tons of promotional appearances.

The Top BWU Chart Songs of 2008 (#10-1)

After 28 weeks of The BWU Chart, its time to see which songs really made their mark in 2008.

10. The Loving Kind - Girls Aloud (#1 peak, 9 weeks and counting, 347 points)

It would take a pretty big song to dethrone six-week #1 "The Promise". Who better to do it than the Girls themselves? The week their album Out of Control came out, their rumored second single debuted at #1, knocking their current single to #2. After a few weeks of turbulence, a new single mix and video shoved the song back into the top slot, further extending Girls Aloud's #1 reign to an astonishing 10 weeks, more than any artist.





9. If I Were a Boy - Beyonce (#2 peak, 13 weeks and counting, 362 points)
Beyonce's ballad about gender switching made a strong impression on the BWU Chart, spending three weeks at #2 behind "The Promise". The persistent song ending up with six weeks in the Top 10 including a return after three weeks of dropping. Although it lost out in the fight for #1, it goes to show how strength can reap rewards, like a triple platinum certification this past week.






8. Womanizer - Britney Spears (#2 peak, 14 weeks and counting, 366 points)
I don't care how much you hat Britney or pop music, you loved the hook of the song (Boy, don't try to front, I-I know ju-just what you a-are) and you DEFINITELY loved the video (steamy, wet, naked, toned Britney, anyone). Brit's comeback brought her a #2 debut and five weeks in the Top 10. Add this with her first #1 in a decade on the US charts, it's very clear that Britney's "comeback" doesn't need quotations anymore.






7. Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) - Beyonce (#3 peak, 13 weeks and counting, 379 points)
While "If I Were a Boy" had a better start, this booty-shaking R&B stomper has stood the test of time. The song with the most YouTubed dance around has spent its entire run so far in the Top 20, outlasting the former single and outpeaking it on the Year-End. I guess people would prefer if Beyonce didn't delve into differences with the sexes after all.







6. Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis (#4 peak, 21 weeks, 389 points)
Another song that peaked before the chart began. Still, Leona enjoyed the second longest chart run with Grammy-nominated pop mega-smash. The song put her on the map, and rightfully so, considering how ridiculously huge it was, with four weeks on the top of the US charts and 3 million in downloads. This song was only the beginning for her, and definitely not the last time you will see her on this chart.





5. Just Dance - Lady Gaga (#1 peak, 19 weeks, 402 points)
THIS. SONG. WON'T. DIE. Everytime you think this song's run is over, it just shoots up again. When you have one of the most exciting debuts of the year, it's really not that surprising. GaGa planted her roots on this chart when she spent three weeks at #1 in the late summer, and now, she still doesn't want to leave. Frankly, I don't mind if she doesn't.







4. Hot N Cold - Katy Perry (#3 peak, 19 weeks, 464 points)

This song surprisingly outlasted her debut smash "I Kissed a Girl", but the bouncing pop of this song deserved its chart glory. While it didn't spend one week at the top, it spent a huge 14 weeks in the Top 20. Despite the song's title, this song never went cold on us.







3. Disturbia - Rihanna (#1 peak, 22 weeks, 548 points)
The chart's first ever number one must have a place in the Top 3, right? Yet, it wasn't RiRi's #1 status that placed here. How about her 13-week run in the Top 10? Or, her 22 weeks on the chart in total, tieing her for longest chart run ever? Yeah, this creepy pop monster should definitely be here. All hail Queen Rihanna...







2. Better In Time - Leona Lewis (#1 peak, 22 weeks, 560 points)
Hold that thought for a second. Leona's second single promptly gave her a rightful claim to the throne. The song spent four weeks wallowing in the bottom half of the Top 20 before skyrocketing to #1 and staying there for a month, the longest chart run until another song came along. 18 weeks in the Top 20 allowed this song to surpass "Disturbia" in October to become the most successful chart song in history. But wait...

1. The Promise - Girls Aloud (#1 peak, 15 weeks, 564 points)

Yes, the Girls, this week no less, snatched Leona's crown from her. Girls Aloud's lead single for Out of Control was going to be massive, but even I didn't expect this. A mind-blowing SIX weeks at the top kept songs from Beyonce, Ne-Yo, Britney, and Kings of Leon at bay, making them cool their heels at #2. Even when the 60's style track fell to #2 (by its own hand, of course), it spent a total of ELEVEN weeks in the Top 5 alone. 15 weeks in, it hasn't left the Top 10, and is now the most chart song EVER. So sorry RiRi and LeLe, the true chart queens are Girls Aloud, and the anthem, "The Promise".

The BWU Chart: James Morrison Takes Top Spot, Bloc Pary Debut at #2

THIS WEEK'S NUMBER-ONE SINGLE:

James Morrison has made chart history.

On the last chart week of 2008, Morrison topped the BWU Chart with his single "Broken Strings" with Nelly Furtado, making him the first solo male artist to ever top the chart. Last month, Take That became the first male artists to top the chart with "The Garden". Along with that feat, he is the first artist to ascend to the top in 23 weeks. The last artist to do that was Leona Lewis and "Better In Time", which went to #1 from #11.

Continuing with the male dominance theme of this week's chart, British indie rock band Bloc Party debut at #2 this week with their song "Signs". The song, featured in the latest Gossip Girl episode, nearly missed out on a number-one debut. This week marks the first time that songs by male artists occupied the top two spots of the chart.

Last week's #1, "The Loving Kind" slips to #3, while Leona's "Run" slips to #5. Despite the drop, she gained enough points to break into the 300s. 

Speaking of records, Girls Aloud's "The Promise" has officially surpassed Leona's "Better In Time" to become the most successful song in BWU Chart history, beating her by only four point. "The Promise" holds the #8 spot this week.

BWU HOT 40: Girls Aloud Score Christmas Number One, James Morrison Comes In Second

THE CHRISTMAS NUMBER-ONE

The first BWU Hot 40 Christmas chart has been released today, and Girls Aloud have claimed the Christmas #1 of 2008.

"The Loving Kind", which has spent 3 non-consecutive weeks at the top previously, sat at the top again this week. The song fought off serious competition from James Morrison and Nelly Furtado's "Broken Strings", which shot up from #10 to #2. Girls Aloud have now spent a combined total of 10 weeks on the top of the chart, more than any other artist in chart history.

Katy Perry's "Thinking of You" rockets up 24 spots this week, from #29 to #5, reaching a new peak thanks to the release of the music video. Also influenced by music video releases are David Archuleta and Beyonce; Archie's "A Little Too Not Over You" moves up to #24, and Beyonce's "Halo" and "Diva" debuted at #8 and #26 respectively.

BWU Hot 40: Girls Aloud Reclaim Top Spot, Brandy Moves Up

THIS WEEK'S #1 SINGLE

Girls Aloud reign again!

The BWU award-nominated British girl group return to the #1 spot on this week's BWU Hot 40 with their upcoming single "The Loving Kind". The song originally debuted on the top six weeks ago, but saw a small drop. It rebounded last week, and it is now the first song in chart history to have a second run at #1. Their six-week #1 "The Promise" slips out of the Top 5 to #6.

Brandy sees a nice increase this week with "Long Distance", which moves up to #3 from its debut at #7. Keeping Brandy from the #2 slot is Leona Lewis' "Run".

Last week's #1, Take That's "The Garden", fell to #4 this week, tying Rihanna's "Disturbia" for the biggest drop from the top spot ever. Their lead single "Greatest Day" completely leaves the Top 10 for the first time, falling to #15 from #6. Their other charting album track, "How Did It Come To This", moves up to #28.

This week's Hot Shot Debut belongs to Jazmine Sullivan's "Bust Your Windows" at #7. Also debuting this week is Lily Allen's "The Fear" at #9, Britney's "If U Seek Amy" at #19, and Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" at #32.

This week's steepest drop belongs to Boyzone; their comeback single "Love You Anyway" plummets 13 spots from #16 to #29. Their current single "Better" replaces it, falling out of the Top 10 from #8

BWU Hot 40: Take That Debut at the Top, Make Chart History

British pop group Take That have become the first male artists to hit #1 on the BWU Hot 40.

In the chart's 24 week history, no other male artist has topped the chart. Many have come close, including Ne-Yo and Coldplay, but none made it until this week. "The Garden", an album track from their album The Circus, debuted at the top, knocking Leona Lewis' "Run" down to #2. Take That also are the first artists to have an album track #1. Another album track from the album, "How Did It Come To This", enters at #32.

Continuing the male domination of this week's chart is Coldplay, whose new single "Lovers In Japan" catapults from #17 to #4, their second Top 5 single on the chart.

Girls Aloud hold firm this week, with "The Loving Kind" at #3, and "The Promise" spending an 11th week in the Top 5 at #5.

Brandy's new single "Long Distance" enters this week at #7, her highest charting single so far. The Saturdays, whose single "Up" is close to the 300-point mark, sees another Top 10 debut, with "Issues". The Fray debut at #22 with new single "You Found Me".

BWU Hot 40: Leona Lewis Scores Thanksgiving #1 In Third Week

It's a very funny week with the BWU Hot 40, with many songs either rising high or dropping terribly low.

On a high note for Leona Lewis, her third week at the top with "Run" gets her two distinctions. She is now tied with girl group Girls Aloud for most weeks at #1 and she has the first ever Thanksgiving number one. On a low note, her other single "Forgive Me" drops 10 spots to 29, and her first #1, "Better In Time" drops out completely.

Speaking of Girls Aloud, their second #1 single "The Promise" sees a major rebound, jumping up from #8 back to #2, after news of its official release was revealed this week. "The Promise" holds firm in the Top 5 at #4. The girl group has officially surpassed Rihanna for most weeks in the Top 5.

The biggest rebound goes to Sugababes, whose album track "You On A Good Day" vaults up 11 spots to #11. Their upcoming single "No Can Do" also enters the chart this week at #33.

Beyonce re-enters the top 10 with "If I Were A Boy" at #7, while Mariah re-enters at #9 with "I Stay In Love".

The biggest drop is "The Boy Does Nothing" by Alesha Dixon, which falls from #6 to #21.

BWU Hot 40: Leona Still #1 Amidst Four New Top 10s

Leona Lewis' single "Run" has spent a second week on top of the BWU Hot 40. To date, Leona has logged six weeks on the top, putting her behind Girls Aloud with the most weeks at number one for an artist.

This week saw the most Top 10 chart entries yet. Irish pop group Boyzone saw two new singles enter: upcoming single "Better" at #4 and current single "Love You Anyway" at #10. Beyonce scores another Top 2 debut with "Smash Into You" off of the Deluxe Edition of I Am... Sasha Fierce. Alesha Dixon's single "The Boy Does Nothing" enters at #6.

Former number one "The Loving Kind" falls down to #8, while Girls Aloud's six-week chart-topper "The Promise" holds firm at #3.

BWU Hot 40: Leona Scores Another Number One

The week after Girls Aloud became the first artist to score a second number-one song, Leona Lewis does it too.

The British songbird, who spent four weeks on top in the summer with "Better In Time", debuted at the top this week with "Run", the upcoming single from the deluxe edition of Spirit. It is her first single to debut at the top. In the same week, her current UK single "Forgive Me" falls out of the top 10 to #12. She currently has 2 other songs in the top 40: "Better In Time" at #28 and "Bleeding Love" at #40.

Last week's #1, "The Loving Kind" falls to #2 this week, ending Girls Aloud's 7-week reign at the top. The girl group previously spent 6 weeks on the top with "The Promise", which moves down to #3.

Lady GaGa, who made a giant rebound with "Just Dance" last week, sees new single "Poker Face" enter at #4.

Despite a questionable performance on The X Factor, Mariah Carey's single "I Stay In Love" continues its seventh week of gains, breaking into the top 10 at #8.

Girls Aloud Tie BWU Chart Record!

UK pop group Girls Aloud have tied Leona Lewis' "Better In Time" for the most weeks at the top of the BWU Hot 40.

"The Promise", the girls' first single from the upcoming Out of Control album, spends a fourth week at #1, tying the record Leona set in July. If they last another week at the top, they would set a new record.

Beyonce holds steady at #2 with "If I Were a Boy", while her other single "Single Ladies" moves up behind it at #3.

Leona sees a boost this week, with "Forgive Me" re-entering the charts at #6, which kept "Better In Time" from re-entering the top 10, stalling at #11. The Greatest Gainer of the week is Rihanna, whose single "Disturbia" rises up from #29 to #12.

Two UK group debut this week; Take That's new single "Greatest Day" enters at #8, while Westlife's "Something Right" enters at #30.

BWU Hot 40: Girls Aloud On Top Again

UK girl group Girls Aloud continue their reign as queens of the BWU Hot 40, spending a second week on top with "The Promise". They kept Britney Spears off the top, whose new single "Womanizer", enters at #2.

Also making big waves is Will Young, who sees a gain in chart fortunes as his single "Changes" moves up 7 spots to #4 and a new song "Love" charts at #35. As he makes the biggest jump of the week, "Up" by The Saturdays sees a steep 18-spot drop, from #3 down to #21.

BWU Hot 40: Girls Aloud Top Chart On Reboot

After a month, the BWU Hot 40 is back!

The chart has been rebooted, so the chart positions from the previous week are ignored. All the points accumulated will remain the same.

To celebrate the chart's return, Girls Aloud top the chart, with their new single "The Promise". This makes it the group's first #1 on the Hot 40 and the first group, male or female, to top the chart.

New chart entries include Ne-Yo's songs "Mad" and "Lie To Me", Katy Perry's "Thinking of You", and The Saturdays' "Up".

BWU Hot 40: Three Weeks of Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga spends a third week on top of the BWU Hot 40 with "Just Dance". She is behind Leona Lewis' "Better In Time" for most weeks at #1, and I expect her to tie the record next week.

This week's highest debut goes to Taylor Swift, whose new Olympic soundtrack single "Change" enters at #3. This sets a three-way tie for highest non-#1 debut, with "So What" by Pink and "Hot N Cold" by Katy Perry.

Little Jackie's "The World Should Revolve Around Me" shoots up 21 places from #25 to #4. Last week's big climber David Archuleta moves into the top 10 with "Crush", peaking at #9 this week.

"Single" by New Kids on the Block, "Bad Girl" by Danity Kane, "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis, and "Just a Dream" by Carrie Underwood all fall out of the top 10 this week.

On this week's BWU Hot 40, Lady GaGa remains on top with "Just Dance", after becoming the second artist in history to debut at #1. She is the first artist to retain the #1 spot after debuting there.

"A Little Bit Longer" by Jonas Brothers moves up to #2, supported by a #1 placing on the Song Play chart. This is the trio's second top 5 single; their first, "Burnin' Up", falls down to #22 this week.

This week's highest debut is Pink, whose new single "So What" enters the chart at #3, tying with Katy Perry for the second highest chart debut. Other songs debuting this week include "Just a Dream" by Carrie Underwood (#10), "No Substitute Love" by Estelle (#21), and "Miss Independent" by Ne-Yo (#30).

David Archuleta sets a chart record this week, by jumping up 29 spots to #11 this week, after debuting last week at #40. The original chart record belonged to the Pussycat Dolls, who jumped 22 spots from #24 to #2 two months ago.

BWU Hot 40: Lady GaGa's #1!

On this week's BWU Hot 40, Lady GaGa becomes the second artist in chart history to debut at #1, with "Just Dance". She dethrones Whitney Houston, whose buzz single "Like I Never Left" falls to #2. Danity Kane's "Bad Girl" moves up to #4 this week after debuting at #10 last week.

"A Little Bit Longer", the Jonas Brothers song about Nick's diabetes, moves up 14 spots to #6, with the release of the single. Their highest charting single, "Burnin' Up", falls to #11. They also see another song debut, 3rd single "Tonight" at #33.

The second highest debut of the week is Secondhand Serenade's "Fall For You" which enters at #12. Other debuts this week include Duffy's 4th UK single "Stepping Stone" and Seal of Approval song "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock.

BWU Hot 40: Whitney Breaks Record

Although the song may or may not be the first single from her upcoming album, it has made chart history.

On this week's BWU Hot 40, Whitney edged out Rihanna to become the first artist in the history of the chart to debut at #1 with "Like I Never Left". The song topped the interest chart, but came in second on the Song Play chart, which Rihanna topped. The boost came from the release of the video for "Disturbia".

Other singles that debuted on the chart were Danity Kane's "Bad Girl", which outpeaked their biggest single "Damaged", Miley Cyrus' "Fly On The Wall", Ashanti's "Good Good" and Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours".

BWU Hot 40 Chart News: Whitney's Big Debut!

Although the chart isn't completed, Whitney's new single "Like I Never Left" will make a HUGE debut, even though it hasn't been confirmed as a single (it was on her official MySpace, that's enough to make it official).

Whitney is currently duking it out with Rihanna and Leona for the #1 spot. If she ends up getting it, she will have the record for the highest debut and she'll be the first artist to debut at #1 with a single, guaranteeing an automatic Gold certification!

Introducing the BWU Classix Chart!

Now, I love my new music, but I get the biggest kick out of the music from the past. In fact, I think I play more old songs (past the current year) than any other.

So, to show that, I have put together the BWU Classix Chart.

The Classix chart measures the most popular songs from past the current music year (which is 2008). It can be any year, although my music library starts in the 1960s. The chart will be updated every weekend.

The current number one song is "Something Kinda Oooh" by Girls Aloud.

The points system still counts for Classix songs, and a song will be certified, as well as their artist.

BWU Hot 40: Leona's #1 Again, Ne-Yo Jumps

On the BWU Hot 40, Leona Lewis spends a second week at #1, with "Better In Time". She is tied with Rihanna and Katy Perry for most weeks at #1. Ne-Yo's song "Closer" jumps up 8 spots to #2, thanks to chart-topping placement on the Interest chart. The highest debut of the week is Keri Hilson's "Energy", which enters at #20. Other songs debuting this week are "Give It 2 Me" by Madonna and "Can't Speak French" by Girls Aloud.

In certifications, Leona scores two double platinum certifications this week with "Bleeding Love" and "Better In Time". Many songs were certified platinum this week, including "Closer" and "Burnin' Up".

BWU Hot 25: Leona Hits #1, Miley Plummets

On this week's BWU Hot 25, Katy Perry's run at the top is cut by Leona Lewis, whose new single "Better In Time" shoots up 11 places. The boost primarily comes from BIT's second place chartings on the Song Play and the Interest chart (thanks to the release of her video). Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" falls down one spot to #2, while her other song, "Hot N Cold", falls two spots to #5.

The biggest jump of the week belongs to Plies, who jumped up 17 places with "Bust It Baby Pt. 2" after it was added to my iTunes. It sits at #8 on Song Play and #6 on Interest.

Pacemaker Keyshia Cole continues her slow climb up the chart, hitting a new peak of #3 on all three charts.

The rebound of the week also belongs to Leona and "Bleeding Love", which claws its way up to #12 after falling 7 spots last week.

The biggest drop of the week is Miley Cyrus. Her single "7 Things" falls 11 spots from its place in the Top 10.
