The Best, Worst, and UNbelievable of... iPhone OS 4.0

iPhone OS 4.0: All the New Features

Just two hours ago, Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed the highly anticipated new version of the iPhone OS, iPhone OS 4. Here is my typical breakdown of all the major details of the operating system, due for release in the summer:

BEST
- Multitasking, multitasking, multitasking, and multitasking: After tons of complaining regarding the lack of multitasking between apps, Apple has finally provided an answer. Built into the new interface, users will be able to double-press the Home button and a tray of running apps will pop up. Multitasking is aided by seven basic services: background audio (Pandora), VOIP (Skype), background location (GPS), push notifications, local notifications, task completion (uploading pictures), fast app switching (apps are frozen to save state).

- iBooks: While it seems like it should be reserved for the glorious iPod, I think it makes perfect sense to but iBooks on the iPhone and iPod Touch. If Amazon can do it with the Kindle...

- iAd: Most people won't give a flying flip about iAd, but you've got to admit, they have just changed the game. I mean, never has an internet advertisement been so interactive. I usually ignore ads, but if they are as cool as Apple made them out to be, then I might try a few out.

- Custom Backgrounds - FINALLY! Even though there is a cool Backgrounds app that changes the Welcome Screen background, that doesn't change the home screen. Now that the iPad can do it, the iPhone can.

- No more Home Screen clutter, thanks to folders: Sick of swiping through your 9 home screens to find Tap Tap 3? Thanks to the new folder system, you can group apps together in folders with common themes, or whatever your choosing. With this new system, you can house up to 2160 apps. Not sure if anyone needs that many, but the option is pretty sick.

Unified mailbox: I have three mail accounts, so this is great for me. I can finally view my mail in one stream, instead of switching between accounts.

WORST
- Original iPhone/3G and 1st and 2nd generation iPod Touch lose out: this doesn't affect me, but I feel your pain. Because, according to Jobs, they just can't handle out, the earliest iPhone generation users won't be able to get multitasking on their phones. Same goes for early iTouch adopters too. It's clearly an incentive upgrade to either the 3GS or the new iPhone coming out this summer. So, I guess it's time to check out your upgrade plans.

- No support for IM and Twitter tracking: For people obsessed with tracking the Twitterverse and hoping multitasking would aid this on the iPhone, you're out of luck. There is no background support for Twitter or AIM, meaning you'll have to continue relying on the push notification system.

- June arrival for iPhone and Fall arrival for iPad: Don't you just wish you waited? Any iPad owners irritated by lack of multitasking will have to wait until the temperatures drop again for iPhone OS 4 to remedy them. June is going to be quite the wait.

UNBELIEVABLE
- The Game Center: Is Apple seriously coming for XBOX Live? Leaderboards, matchmaking, even a points system? Jobs has officially made a bid for the video game market. Due later this year, whenever that means.

- 100 more features: They only presented 7 "tentpoles", but there will be reportedly 100 new features when the OS rolls out. I can't even begin to speculate on what else they have been cooking up for iPhone users.

- No Flash: Come on! They finally find a solution for multitasking, but not for Flash? Yes, Jobs, we get it: Flash blows chunks. It is also used by every major website on the Internet. Does he not realize how freaking EPIC the iFamily would be if they allowed even a weaker version of it? It's ridiculous.

Even with the worst and unbelievable things, I am very much looking forward to the new iPhone OS when it comes out this summer.
