Whitney: Road to the Comeback (Part 2)

“A Moment in Time” coverOne Moment In Time (1988) - This song was released as the official theme to the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, and helped return Whitney to the Top 5. "One Moment In Time" was perfect for the Olympics, talking about that single moment where everything you have worked hard for is within your reach. Her rousing vocal performance only helped lift the sentiments of the song. I regard it as one of her best vocal performances ever, and this song is one of my all-time favorite songs. Rating: 9/10

I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990) - This song, and its album of the same name, was a respond to the critics who called her music "too pop" (or cruelly,"too white"). Whitney was out to prove that she could have the amazing voice, while still remaining edgy and with R&B. Produced by genre legend Babyface, the song was a success, giving her first #1 single since '88. I am a bigger fan of the Whitney ballads, but the funkier sound of "Baby Tonight" was very cool. Rating: 8/10

“All the Man That I Need” coverAll The Man That I Need (1991) - Ballads are Whit's bread and butter, plain and simple. So it was no shock when this song went to #1. This song showed Whitney stretching those amazing vocal chords of hers even further, delivering a powerful climax to a rather dull beginning and middle. Unfortunately, that dullness has caused to the hit to fade into some obscurity when Whitney's discography is pulled out for reference. Rating: 7.5/10

My Name Is Not Susan (1991) - Many considered the song an utter flop. It peaked at #20 on the US charts (#8 on the R&B charts), a far cry from her #1 hits. That being said, Whitney is at her sassiest on this record. Previously known as the "Black Barbie", she showed she wasn't a doll to play around with. This harder-edgied Whitney probably surprised fans, which caused it to fail. Yet, her voice excelled with the attitude. File this one under the hit that should've been.
