Honestly, the British females are owning it right now!
Adele has one of the most distinctive voices I have heard in a while. People have compared her to Amy Winehouse, and I can see why. Both have A LOT of soul and passion when they sing. You can feel whatever they sing, whether its joy or sorrow.
I previously chose "Chasing Pavements" as a Download of the Day, but that was before I heard Hometown Glory. The song was released on iTunes awhile back for free, but I never paid it any mind. But after hearing it performed on One Tree Hill, I realized what I had been missing.
The song is an ode to London, her hometown. The song is a simple piano ballad, driven to emotional complexity by the lyrics and how she sings. Through her words, London, a place I've never been to but really want to, comes alive. She describes everything from the weather to the people. She also makes London seem like a tough city that "ain't gonna stand shit". These things I wouldn't have known if I read some book, so thank you Adele.
Her voice is just unbelievable. Its so rich, especially in her lower register. She plays with her range in the song, going from her distinctive tone to some higher notes. She goes from soft to powering through the notes. Vocally, the song is perfection.
Hopefully, like Amy and Leona before her, Adele can break through and show the cheap artists out there how to make a real song.
