The Saturdays, the newest UK girl group, is releasing their new single "Up" in the coming weeks, putting them in direct competition with some of the most anticipated records from GA, Sugababes, Leon Jackson, Leona, and more. Will they be "up" for the challenge?
They sure have a good shot.
"Up" is a major step-up from their first single "If This Is Love". The rapid, pulsating beats aren't anything particularly new, but it still sounds interesting and cool. It's quite the thumper of a song, begging to choreographed within an inch of its life. It's all good fun, a trend which has been re-emerging in pop lately (thanks Katy Perry and Pink). The girls themselves also sound good, although their voices aren't distinctive enough to identify. Then again, not much is known about them anyway.
If The Saturdays are hoping for success similar to the predecessors/contemporaries, they really need to boost their profile. While the music is good, its simply not enough for an upstarting girl group. That said, "Up" does what it needs to; establish the girls a serious pop group.
And if they cross over to the States ("Up" was used in the Ugly Betty promos), well that's just fine.
