Classic UNbelievable: Cliff Richard and "The Millennium Prayer"

Many Americans will probably not know who Cliff Richard is, but in the UK, he is one of the most successful artists in history. He has 69 top 10 singles on the UK chart, which is absolutely unheard across the pond.

However, I'm sure even the British people have to question this choice.

In 1999, Cliff Richard released his last single before the new millennium, aptly title "The Millennium Prayer". You would think that people would know what they were in for just by the title, but no.

"The Millennium Prayer" is Cliff Richard singing the Lord's Prayer to the music of "Auld Lang Syne".

Doesn't that sound ridiculous?

Well, it must have been somewhat conceivable. Although Cliff's label EMI refused to release it, he found another label who would. When it finally was, the song went to #1 on the UK charts for two weeks. Two weeks! It would've been the Christmas number one (a huge deal in the UK, we don't notice in America) had Westlife not taken the spot with "I Have A Dream" (and no, it's not about Martin Luther King's speech). The song ended up being the third highest selling single of his entire career.

Here is a video of him singing it live:

Now, he sounds good singing it, but seriously? Why was this #1 period, let alone two weeks?

UK readers, I would really appreciate your input. If you like/d this song, why? Religious content? Auld Lang Syne? The awkward fusion of them both?

And for anyone else, love it? Hate it?
