Beyoncé's New Video "Countdown" Proves That She Is The Most Functional Pregnant Woman Ever

Beyoncé released the music video for her new single "Countdown", and she proved that pregnancy is not slowing her down. In fact, she flaunts the fact that she's a boss with baby in tow in the video, rolling around the floor in a black catsuit and dancing in her typical colored unitard.

Britney Spears Comes Back To Life (Figuratively) In "I Wanna Go" Music Video

I've been pretty hard on Britney Spears as of late.

I'm sorry, but I just couldn't except that the vibrant young girl that ruled the world not that long ago could become such a zombie in front of our eyes.

Well, something brought her back to life, just in time for her music video for her new single "I Wanna Go".



In the span of four minutes, Brit curses out a press conference full of people, flashes a kid, gets felt up by a cop, throws a microphone (seriously, as if she really needs one. Sorry, I had to thrown in some shade) at people, and goes on a joy ride. It's all a fun affair, and Britney looks like she's actually engaged and enjoying the zaniness of it all. Leave it to the princess of pop to wait the third single to drop one of the best  music videos of the year.

I'm hoping that Britney can keep the momentum as she treks through her Femme Fatale Tour.

Big Time Rush's "Worldwide" Music Video Is a Carbon Copy of Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way"

See the connection?

If you haven't been too preoccupied with the NKOTBSB tour, then you may have noticed a new boy band trying to dig into lucrative (and irritating) screaming teen girl demographic currently owned by Justin Bieber.

They are called Big Time Rush, and they currently gave a show on Nickelodeon with the same name as a cross-promotion technique (think The Monkees, but set in a hotel). They scored some pretty solid mainstream cred by scoring a Top 40 radio hit "Boyfriend", featuring Snoop Dogg, and they seem to only be getting bigger.

So much bigger that they decided to pay homage to their predecessors.

The boys just released the music video for "Worldwide", their latest single, and the first thing that immediately popped into my head while watching it was, "didn't the Backstreet Boys make this video twelve years ago?".

Indeed, BSB did have a music video set in an airport, wearing white, with really cheesy choreography. It was for a little ditty called "I Want It That Way", also known as one of the best songs of the teen pop era, hands down.

To be fair to BTR though, their video may not meant to be a blatant, not-as-good ripoff of the Backstreet Boys' iconic clip. The video and song appear to be a tie-in for their first TV movie, which is about the breakup of one of the bandmates and his girlfriend.

Whatever the intention, it was quite funny to see the comparison between the two videos. Let's just say that the BSB legacy is pretty secure (besides from their own hacking at it).

On top of the "I Want It That Way" comparison, here are some other notes on the song and video:

- Their choreographer needs to be fired, ASAP. Boy bands are known for silly dance moves, but these are just plan lazy

- The song isn't that bad. I mean, it's cheesy and very teen, but it's a lot less pretentious than Justin Bieber

- Logan (the guy in the tie) needs to drop his vocal register an octave or two because his voice almost hurt my eardrums.

Katy Perry Has The Best House Party EVER in "Last Friday Night" Music Video

Sorry Gaga, but Katy Perry has dropped the best music video of the year.

I mean, how can "Last Friday Night" not be the best video of the year, with its crazy, balls-out 80's house party, an incredibly dorkified-turned-mallrat-hot Katy Perry, and cameos galore. I mean, Kenny G? Debbie Gibson? Rebecca Black?

There really isn't much to say except that Katy Perry delivered a blast of a video, which guarantees at least two weeks at #1 for her fifth single from Teenage Dream.

Yup, she's coming for Michael Jackson's record (he scored five #1 hits in the 80's with Bad).

Lady Gaga Strips Down for "The Edge of Glory" Music Video

Lady Gaga is known for very incredibly over-the-top take on music videos. The results have been fairly mixed; there have been the epics ("Bad Romance"), the fails ("Alejandro"), and the just plain ridiculous ("Telephone", as great as it was).

But Gaga has never done before what she's done with the video for "The Edge of Glory".

Those expecting blinding flash, massive storylines that can't fit into a five minute timeframe, and insane fashion will be sorely disappointed in the video for Gaga's third single. "The Edge of Glory", which was directed by the Haus of Gaga, is Gaga's most stripped-down, bare bones video yet. Forgoing the murder, crashing waves, russian mafia cameos, and armadillo shoes of videos past, this one just has the New York-bred megastar dancing and gyrating in an empty street and a fire escape. Keeping her company is Clarence Clemons, who did the song's sax solo and is currently recovering from a massive stroke.

I won't even bother lying; the video is boring. It's very, very boring, especially compared to her last five music videos. That said, the video is another visual beauty. Also, there's something to appreciate about how simple this video is. We've come to expect insanity from Lady Gaga, but it was actually nice to see her just being normal (sort of), enjoying herself in the city that she loves, looking like a hooker. It fit the message of the song well, a lot better than the rumored mermaid theme would have.

"The Edge of Glory" may not be edgy, or glorious, but maybe that was the point. With all of the outrageous things that Gaga has done which beg for controversy, the irony that her simplest video is her most controversial act yet cannot be taken for granted.

Rihanna's Murderous "Man Down" Music Video Sparks (Unnecessary) Outrage with Parents Television Council

Yesterday on BET, and today on VEVO, Rihanna premiered the video for other new single "Man Down".

Never one to miss the chance for nice, old-fashioned scolding, the Parents Television Council has taken pop star Rihanna to task for it, according to TMZ.

The group, which was made famous by a Gossip Girl ad repeating their criticisms, is accusing her of advocating the "cold, calculated execution of murder" in her video. Following the song to a tee, the music video tells the story of a young girl (Rihanna) who shoots a man from her window near a train station. The man she shot was the same man who accosted her in an alley the night before and raped her.

The non-profit organization brought Chris Brown into the argument as well, claiming that "if Chris Brown shot a woman in his new video and BET premiered it, the world would stop. Rihanna should not get a pass..."

As inappropriate and irrelevant as it was to bring Chris Brown into the discussion of this video, I would have to agree on that point. If Chris did a video like this, even I would catch a case about it. It would obliterate his career, no doubt.

However, I think that artistic license should be applied in Rihanna's case. Obviously, Rihanna is not saying to people that murder is a just response to something as traumatic as rape. It is a understandable reaction, though, to harm the person to harmed you back. Despite the wishes of the PTC, life is not a High School Musical-esque fantasy, where the worst curse word you'll hear is crap. People have darker sides, born especially from trauma and pain. Rihanna is simply exploring that, which she is allowed to as an artist. It's called artistic expression.

While I commend them for their efforts to protect children, I think they really should be advising parents on how to properly monitor their kid's programming, instead of attacking the producers of that programming.

I also happen to think this is one of her best videos to date. The ending was shocking, raw, and considering her past, very brave of her.

Video Premiere: Does Beyoncé "Run The World"?

I'll be honest; I really do enjoy Beyoncé's new single "Run The World (Girls)", even though at its core its Major Lazer's "Pon De Floor" with lyrics (ironically, he performed at my school Trinity College's Spring Weekend in April).

The single has had a disappointing chart performance since its release, debuting and peaking at a shockingly low #33 (for context, Christina's "Not Myself Tonight" debuted at #23). As of Tuesday, it slipped as low as #180 on iTunes. In simpler terms, Beyoncé was gearing up for her first real, epic flop.

Thankfully (and finally), Beyoncé and her team released the much-anticipated video, which was proceeded by a bunch of teasers that didn't really do anything for her. Much of the video debuted on American Idol, where she was also mentoring for the week. It follows a trend started by judge Jennifer Lopez and her video for "On The Floor", the results of that are still being seen on the iTunes chart. It was a smart move for the diva, who has done promotion so far that makes Britney Spears look like she's breaking her back working.

So, what about the video?

It's directed by Nicholas Lawrence, the brainchild behind Lady Gaga's epic "Bad Romance", and features the megadiva fighting a righteous battle in the desert somewhere. It's the classic battle of the sexes, except with a lot more couture, and animals. Just like other Lawrence videos of late, its visually striking, and Beyoncé has never looked more show-stoppingly gorgeous as she reveals her dark and wild side (well, as much as Beyoncé ever would) to the masses. The choreography is an absolute killer; any doubts about her abilities as a dancer should and must be squashed with this video. Frankly, not much else is going on, but when you're Beyoncé, what more do you need?

With the poor chart performance of the single (which is improving on the video's release), it may not seem like Beyoncé is running the world, but the clip is proof that the pop throne is just waiting for her to sit on it.

Gaga Goes Simplistic For "Born This Way" Video

We've come to expect the most outrageous, absurd, over-the-top things from pop megastar Lady Gaga, but this era, she's taking things down a notch.

After a subdued, but still awesome Grammy performance of her single "Born This Way", which in itself doesn't quite match the braggadocio of "Bad Romance", Gaga has released the highly-anticipated music video for her #1 smash. Anyone expecting exploding meat dresses or anything of the sort might be surprised: "Born This Way" is the most anti-elaborate video she's ever released.

The video, as Gaga put it, supposed to show the birth of a new human race. While there are some scenes of Gaga, who dresses up like some alien queen with a huge beehive, birthing something, most of the video features her hatchlings dancing in a completely black space, with Gaga dancing around in her face horns and black underwear. After the insanity of "Telephone" and the "creepiness" of Alejandro, this video is, and I'm surprised to be saying this, quite subdued.

One note: I really liked the little nod to Michael Jackson at the end.

Rihanna Gets Kinky, Sort Of, in "S&M" Video

Everyone's favorite good girl gone bad Rihanna has finally dropped the music video for her new single "S&M". The video depicts Rihanna in various states of risque while playing with the S and M of the title by incorporating the media. There's one particularly funny (and very telling) scene where Rihanna leads gossip king Perez Hilton around on a leash in her front yard. Essentially, it's a statement about how the celebrity ultimately controls the media, it's just how they do it. Very smart, RiRi.

Kanye West's "Monster" Video Leaks

Kanye explores his dark side in new "Monster" video

Kanye West, who I chose as the #1 winner and the #1 comeback of 2010, has decided to celebrate the end of the year with a music video leak.

Ok, maybe it wasn't him, but still, what a great way to get people talking into 2011.

The music video for his single "Monster", featuring Rick Ross, Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj, leaked last night on YouTube in its pre-final version.

Continuing his theme of dark and twisted fantasies, the opening of the video has dead models hanging from the ceiling, with Rick Ross sitting with them. There is a bunch of satanic-teasing iconography in this video, including but not limited to Kanye chilling on a wall with a dead woman's head in his grasp and hands coming from the gates (of Hell?) groping a shirtless Kanye.

My favorite part of the video was Nicki Minaj's part. It appears that two of Nicki's alter egos are in the video, Barbie and either Roman or Nicki herself. Barbie is tied up to a chair in a white dress, while Roman/Nicki is in black dominatrix gear, teasing/torturing her other self.

Basically, this video makes Gaga's Alejandro look like a trip to Strawberry Shortcake's villa in Switzerland.

Willow's "Whip My Hair" Video is Four Minutes of Hair-Whipping Brilliance

Attention Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and all other kid stars of today: you have all been officially made irrelevant.

Willow Smith, the nine-year-old daughter of Hollywood power couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has released the music video for her first single "Whip My Hair", and I have to say, it's amazing.

The video is everything that a video from a nine-year-old pop star should be. It is incredibly fun, colorful, filled with fierce attitude, and yet remains age appropriate. The imagery in this video is just insane, starting from the all-white room and Willow whipping her paint-dipped hair around to bring it to life. Almost every frame following that opener is just pure pop genius; the choreography, Leiomy from ABDC's Vogue Evolution, the janitor, and the toddler dancing, and of course Willow herself. Willow has more swagger than girls three times her age, and she is definitely a lot more interesting than her contemporaries five or six years older than her. Don't ask me how, but she has a hundred different hairdos and rocks each one perfectly. When Willow walked onto the screen with her hair made up into a heart shape, I flashed back to Lady Gaga in that white bearskin coat in her "Bad Romance" video. Both images gave me the same feeling; a star has been born.

If Willow, with the inevitable guidance of her parents and Roc Nation head Jay-Z, can follow the right path starting with this song, than she might be the first child singer since Michael Jackson to truly become a superstar.

"Whip My Hair" will be released to iTunes on October 26th.

Joe McElderry Dances Awkwardly In "Ambitions" Music Video

Big group dancing is often a hit or miss in music videos. It usually depends on the choreography, which can either be awesome (Michael Jackson's Thriller) or just tragic.

Unfortunately, Joe McElderry's video for his new single "Ambitions" falls to the latter.

While a great song, seeing Joe with his random street flash mob punching the air was hilarious, in the wrong way. He does get bonus points for not just sitting in front of a camera and looking sad as a ballad plays overhead. Dancing aside, it is a charming little video, for an epically charming little song (which is actually a cover of some Norwegian megahit. Good choice Simon!).

Kanye West's Music Video "Power" Is Actually Kind of Amazing (...When You Get Over The Pretentiousness)

Rapper Kanye West premiered the music video for "Power" on MTV and Vevo last night, and just as you would expect, people are pretty divided over it.

First of all, the music video is only 1 minute and 43 seconds. That's probably because, as Kanye alluded to but no one took seriously, the music video is actually a depiction of a "moving painting".

The painting shows Kanye dressed like some modernized Roman God with a sword surrounded by a crown over his head and a bunch of weird looking people around him. It looks like some of them are even in water. The most striking image, besides Kanye of course, is of the two women with the long devil-looking horns with the staffs standing on guard in front of him. As the camera pans out, we see the full painting as it's subjects move in slow motion. The ending scene has two floating men either attacking Kanye or each other, before "POWER" comes out on the screen.

So, what of the video?

Some people will probably feel cheated over the very short length, and the fact that it really isn't a video at all. Yes, those expecting a complete storyline, maybe featuring Kanye standing on a cliff above a massive ocean, will feel like the video was a fail.Others may be annoyed or offended (depending on how you view Kanye himself) by the utter amount of ego that went into the production of this clip. I mean, who the hell does Kanye think he is making a video with allusions to him as an otherworldly figure and the blatant Illuminati references?

What those people are missing, though, is that this video is actually brilliant. It's a visual masterpiece, no doubt. The fluidity and the richness of the imagery was astounding and artful, something you rarely ever seen in pop music, especially in hip-hop. As for the content of the video, the depiction of Kanye as some sort of powerful being (with the bright eyes) amongst a bunch of dark and potentially evil imagery wis definitely provocative. Even though I am quick to cut the rapper down for his inflated sense of self, I could see the art in this choice. Finally, the video is brilliant because the concept of a moving painting was so unexpected that it was inspired. He didn't just push the envelope, he ripped it open. The only other artist who has done that with her visual output is Lady Gaga (remember, they were supposed to tour before the VMA incident). As a plus, the music video actually makes me like the song more (I thought the song dragged on a bit; I like the short version).

Is "Power" an ego trip? Most likely, but when isn't anything Kanye does somewhat that? However, there is heavy substance behind the heavy bravado, making for a  truly visceral viewing experience.

Video Premiere: Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie"

Today, Eminem and Rihanna premiered the music video for their #1 smash "Love The Way You Lie".

The video depicts an abusive relationship between characters portrayed by Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan. The scenes switch between physically abuse to rabid passion, with cuts to Rihanna in front of a burning house and Eminem in a cornfield. The two megastars come together in front of the burning house at the end as the man in the relationship is also consumed in flames.

The video is a simple, yet effective depiction of domestic violence and volatile love. I was expecting a bit more, and I feel like some scenes were left on the cutting room floor. but kudos to Eminem for not being afraid to take the bull by the horns and deciding to confront abuse head-on. I think this video actually may help young people diagnose their own relationships and escape them if they are troublesome.

Ke$ha Throws A Colored Sand House Party With "Take It Off"

Two days ago, Ke$ha released the music video for her fourth single "Take It Off", and I just finished watching it (VEVO link above).

I gotta give it to her; while her videos aren't as high budget as you would expect from a three-time Top 10 singles artist, she surely knows how to throw a bangin' party. I mean, where else are you going to find people dissolving into colored dust and sand?

Nowhere except a Ke$ha video.

The Snubulator: MTV Video Music Awards 2010 Edition

So, yesterday, the nominees for the 2010 VMAs were announced, and while some got some very good news, others didn't. In fact, some of the biggest videos of the year were completely ignored.

So, it's time to throw them in the Snubulator and see if they really got snubbed.

Christina Aguilera - Not Myself Tonight

It was definitely one of the most talked about videos of the year, but for all the wrong reasons. It was virtually panned by everyone, and only increased the volume of those cruel "Xeroxtina" nicknames. No one was here for another "Dirrty". Plus, the single itself flopped pretty badly, and the album has virtually been forgotten.

     SNUBULATOR SAYS: Sorry, Xtina, but the snub was deserved. Better luck next album!


Rihanna - Rude Boy, Russian Roulette, and/or Hard

Rihanna is definitely one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and she was particularly visual with her music video output this year. "Russian Roulette" was dark and twisted, "Hard" was full-on military glam, and "Rude Boy" was colorful Island fun. So, what's with the pathetic nomination for "Best Editing"? If anything, "Russian Roulette" should've scored a nomination for Best Female Video. And while "Rude Boy" was the best video of the year, it could've scored a best pop nod. I mean, it went #1 for five weeks. Rihanna's videography deserved recognition, and with the 13-18 nods that Gaga received, MTV could've spared one of those to Rihanna.

Justin Bieber - Baby

Now, I'm not the biggest fan of Bieber, and I'm pretty sure his fanbase might be a little too crazy about him, but even I was surprised by his sole nod for "Baby". I'm pretty sure I was annoyed by the whole bowling party (are you 10?), but it was a pretty big hit and it broke him into the mainstream. That said, I'm glad it wasn't in the Video of the Year category, because I know he would win, solely because of the "Beliebers".
     SNUBULATOR SAYS: Some snubbage detected. Don't worry though, Beliebers. He'll take BNA easy


Black Eyed Peas - Every video from THE E.N.D. 

What did will.i.am and co. do? They weren't nominated last year, and now this year they've been snubbed. Seriously, though. I figured the epic "Imma Be Rocking That Body" would've landed at least something, but no. This goes beyond snub. This reeks of an MTV ban

Miley Cyrus - Can't Be Tamed

Her single underperformed, her album is flopping, and her new image is killing her future career prospects. That all said, the whole bird in a cage thing was inspired. It deserved at least a technical award

Lady Gaga - Alejandro

Yes. I know. EIGHTEEN nominations. But, didn't "Alejandro" deserve a few for it's German-esque cinematography and visceral imagery. Ummm.....yay "Bad Romance"!

Shakira - She Wolf

Come on, MTV! "She Wolf" was easily the coolest, sexiest videos of the last twelve months! Did you see her in that cage? I didn't even know people could bend like that! It deserved a nomination, at least for Best Choreography, damn!
     SNUBULATOR SAYS: There is some sexy snubbage occurring here.


Britney Spears - 3

The third #1 single of her career deserved some credit, right? I mean, she's dancing, looking really pretty, some more dancing....okay, let's be honest. The original version (not the director's cut, that's a different story) was simple at best, and lazy at worst. However, her crown for Queen of MTV is left untarnished by this misstep.

Lady Gaga Owns 2010 MTV Video Music Awards with EIGHTEEN Nominations

Pop behemoth Lady Gaga has proven why she is the new queen of music videos.

Today, the MTV Video Music Award nominations were announced, and Gaga is nominated no less than 18 times for her videos "Bad Romance", "Telephone", and her feature on Beyoncé's "Video Phone". She is nominated for virtually every award she is eligible, including Video of the Year twice. In fact, she is double nominated in five other categories, and triple nominated for Best Choreography. She has broken the record for most nominations in one year by a mile.

With their shared eight nominations, is it possible that Beyoncé and Gaga will perform together on the VMA stage? Here's to hoping.

Eminem's video for "Not Afraid" comes behind Gaga with 8 nominations, including Video of the Year. Beyoncé also scores eight nominations, despite I Am Sasha Fierce being released almost two years ago.

A big nomination surprise comes from Florence + The Machine, who landed a slot in the Video of the Year category for "Dog Days Are Over". Rihanna is majorly snubbed this year, only being nominated for Best Editing for "Rude Boy".

The VMAs will be held on September 12th in Los Angeles.

Music Video Premiere: "Your Love" by Nicki Minaj

After it's release forever ago, rapper Nicki Minaj has finally released the music video for her hit "Your Love".

Taking cues from the lyrics, the music video takes place in a female dojo led by Michael Jai White. The teacher catches the eye of Nicki and another girl, and as you would expect, they end up fighting over him.

I find it surprising, considering all of the cash coming into Young Money, that the video looked so cheap. The concept was actually brilliant, and Nicki looked amazing (she's really coming into her own style), but the overall direction was just amateurish at best. Seriously, whoever is directing the videos at Young Money needs to be dropped stat, because all of them so far have been disappointing.

That said, "Your Love" is a great song and Nicki has a really promising future in the pop arena.

Usher MegaPost: New Single on iTunes, Video for "There Goes My Baby" and More!

Today is a pretty big day for R&B superstar Usher.

Just four days after premiering it on his website, Usher has released "DJ's Got Us Fallin' In Love" on iTunes. The single, featuring Pitbull, is first off of his upcoming EP Versus and is already in the Top 50 of the iTunes Songs chart. Speaking of new singles, Usher won't be leaving his R&B fans hungry for new music: "Hot Tottie" will be the song released to urban radio on August 9th.

Usher's current urban single is "There Goes My Baby", and to promote it, he has finally released the music video for it today on VEVO. The clip shows Usher with his woman frolicking in and around a house on the hill, sometimes shirtless. It's basically a lite version of his steamy "Trading Places" video.

Video Premiere: Katy Perry's Candy Dream World in "California Gurls"

The song may be an ode to California, but it seems liker her ideal world is a magical candy wonderland.

Katy Perry dropped the video for "California Gurls" today, and as the preview suggested, she is living in the classic board game Candyland, with Snoop Dogg rolling the dice (literally). The world is filled with cupcakes, peppermints, gingerbread men, and angry, bird-flipping gummi bears.

Yes, in Katy Perry's dream world, gummi bears give people the middle finger.

Epic.

The video is the perfect antithesis to Gaga's "Alejandro" (by the way, Perry cleared up all the drama yesterday while visiting a French radio station; it's all good in their hood). It's fun, flirty, cute, with the same amount of naked.

Congrats to Katy for an excellent video, a serious contender for the VMAs this year. Just adding to the good news, since "California Gurls" has become her second #1 single on the Hot 100.
