Where was Demi Lovato at this year's Grammy nods?

If you just read my post about Justin Bieber and his not being snubbed by the 2013 Grammys, you're probably wondering who I really thought was snubbed. Here are some of my choices.

Give Your Heart a Break - Demi Lovato
It was a moderate hit, but Demi Lovato's vocal performance is one of the most captivating of the year, at least in terms of Top 40. She probably would've scored a Female Pop Vocal nod, had the category still existed. Grrr....


Swimming Pools (Drank) - Kendrick Lamar
Considering how critically lauded he was, I was very surprised to not see him or his hit single on the Grammy list. It may be because they are holding him off for next year, but I think he still should've scored at least a Best Rap Performance nod.

Let Me Love You (Until You Love Yourself) - Ne-Yo
In a year filled with pointless EDM pop, Ne-Yo's empowering Sia-penned track was easily one of the best. Again, the removal of the Male Pop Vocal award cut his chances big time.

One Direction
After the Jonas Brothers scored a Grammy nod a few years ago, I figured anything was possible. So, I was surprised that the fivesome didn't score at least a Pop Duo/Group Performance nod for "What Makes You Beautiful". Maybe "Little Things", penned by Grammy nominee Ed Sheeran, will score them something next year?

Azealia Banks
This may just be semantics, since she doesn't have a full LP out yet, but "212" is one of best rap songs of the year by far, and she definitely should've garnered some Grammy buzz that would lead her into next year, when I assume her album will be released.

Dear Beliebers (and His Manager), Justin Bieber Was Not Snubbed By The Grammys, and Here's Why

Last night, the 2013 Grammy nominations were announced, with notable mentions of Frank Ocean, Fun., Miguel, Kelly Clarkson, or more.

Of course, with everyone who is nominated for the most prestigious music awards on the planet, there are people who are snubbed.

One of the most obvious absences from the nominee list is Justin Bieber, who released his third album Believe this past year to considerable first week sales and two huge hits, "Boyfriend" and "As Long As You Love Me". Bieber's absence from the Grammys has led his fans into a virtual maelstrom via Twitter. Even Scooter Braun, Bieber's manager, took to Twitter to criticize the Grammy board for snubbing the teenager.

Newsflash, though: he wasn't snubbed. Bieber didn't deserve a Grammy nod this year.

While Justin Bieber received credit from critics for attempting to mature his sound, Believe is nothing more than a decent pop album in a year filled with them. Braun argued that Bieber really worked hard on this album, but a lot of artists work hard, and have produced much stronger efforts. "Boyfriend" has some of the most eye-rolling lyrics in recent pop memory, while "As Long As You Love Me" is standard dubstep-lite fare. Nothing on the album was terribly exciting or pushed any musical boundaries for the year. For example, Bieber's mentor Usher scored a nomination for "Climax", one of the most interesting R&B singles he has ever released. Although it was predictable, Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" is one of the strongest pop ballads of the year. And then there is labelmate Carly Rae Jepsen, who released not only the year's most inescapable hit, but also one of the most charming. Sorry, but there is nothing charming about sitting by the fire, eating fondue.

Then there is his public behavior, which has a lot more weight than you would expect. I'm sure the Grammy committee wouldn't take kindly to an artist who wouldn't even change his clothes to meet the head of state of his own country. Although certainly not the defining factor, the committee takes notice of an artist's behavior. Essentially, he needs to stop acting like a brat.

At the end of the day, there was nothing about Believe that would justify it replacing any of the other nominees. He may have worked hard on it, but that doesn't guarantee a nod, especially if the material just isn't strong enough. Bieber just needs to take stock in the fact that he has indeed been a Grammy nominee before.

Frank Ocean and Fun. Lead 2013 Grammy Nominations

Frank Ocean and Fun. are officially this year's Grammy favorites, both landing six nominations.

The indie pop group landed spots in all of the landmark categories. "We Are Young" is nominated for Record and Song of the Year, Some Nights is nominated for Album of the Year, and Fun. themselves are nominated for Best New Artist.

Meanwhile, R&B crooner Frank Ocean, who stunned the industry with channel ORANGE and the details about his personal life, landed nominations in three of the four landmark categories: Record of the Year for "Thinkin Bout You", Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. He also scored an nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album, with his only competition being Chris Brown's Fortune and Miguel's Kaleidoscope Dream.

Speaking of Miguel, he scored a major coup himself with his single "Adorn", garnering a nod for Song of the Year. Kelly Clarkson also surprised with four nominations, including Record and Song of the Year for "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)". Even though she was snubbed for Record of the Year, Carly Rae Jepsen managed a Song of the Year nod for "Call Me Maybe".

Beyonce, Gaga, and Taylor to Duke It Out (Again) at 2010 Grammys

Pop superstars Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga proved who really ruled the music scene this past year as the nominees for the 2010 Grammys were announced last night.

Beyonce scored an astonishing ten nominations, including the Big Three (Record, Album, and Song of the Year). Also nominated in that category are Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, who landed eight and five nominations respectively.

There was a minor controversy regarding Gaga's lack of a nomination in the Best New Artist category. Her nomination in the Best Dance Recording category last year for "Just Dance" prohibited her from getting nominated as a new artist.

Maxwell, Black Eyed Peas, and Kanye West garnered six nominations, while David Guetta and Jay-Z bagged four.

One of the most noticeable snubs this year was of Canadian rapper Drake. Despite his immense popularity, he only scored two nominations, for Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song. "Day 'N' Nite" rapper Kid Cudi received three nominations.

Despite having a major comeback record in "All I Ever Wanted", Kelly Clarkson received only one nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album, alongside Pink, who is also nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal for "Sober".

The UNBELIEVABLE of the 2009 Grammys

UNBELIEVABLE

I have to give M.I.A props for getting up there and performing, but for God's sake, she looked like she was going to pop right there on the stage. Plus, I can't count how many times people have referred to her as Yoshi from the Mario games.

I'm sorry to Robert Plant and Alison Krauss fans, and I do respect them as veteran artists, but I cannot be the only one who thought their multiple Grammy wins were a bit out of left field, epecially for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. As for Record of the Year, either Leona, Coldplay, or M.I.A was robbed (depending on your preference).

This may be blasphemous speak for some, but U2's performance of their new single "Get On Your Boots" wasn't as epic as expected.

Speaking of epic performances, save for M.I.A., I thought the much-touted "Swagga Like Us" hip-hop summit was terribly underwhelming.

It's funny how people see television differently; some (like me) saw Whitney Houston make a fantastic entrance, others saw her cracked out.

I know its old news now, but the Chris Brown/Rihanna debacle just seems so UNBELIEVABLE!

WORST of the Grammys 2009

WORST (there are quite a few...)




The Rock's whole appearance on the show made no sense. He has NOTHING to do with music, PERIOD. Then there were his lame-ass jokes that made the comical Katy Perry cringe. He made Ryan Seacrest look brilliant.


Note to Chris Martin: you are very rich. You sell millions of albums. You win Grammys like nothing. Can you please dress like you are famous, and not like you just came from a long, dark night underneath an underpass (although I appreciate your bandmate apologize to McCartney for jacking the Sgt. Peppers motif).

Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift perform "Fifteen". I thought the Academy learned their lesson after the Grammy Nominations Concert; Taylor doesn't sing well live. Instead of heeding that warning, they took it a step further and had Miley sing with her, who is worse. Two sub-standard live singers does not a Grammy performance make.

Speaking of Miley and Taylor, shame on the cameramen for not showing their exes', Nick and Joe Jonas, faces while they performed. Hell, MTV showed Justin's reaction when Britney and Madonna made out. The duet was as close to that moment as the Disney queens were going to get.

Speaking of the Jonases, who's great idea was to pair them with Grammy darling Stevie Wonder? There was too much failure about it to truly list, but there's one thing that is truly sad; Nick stumbling over a simple lyric: "thirteen month-old babies". Ironic, huh?

Kanye West must have multiple personality disorder. First he's God, then he's Elvis, now he's 80s Lionel Richie? Make up your mind, and while you're doing that, get a haircut!

The official Grammy snub list: Leona Lewis, Katy Perry, Jazmine Sullivan, everyone who lost to Daft Punk, and Jason Mraz (I threw that in for those who actually love "I'm Yours", I didn't)

Speaking of Leona, there were no true diva performances. Save for Jennifer and arguably Adele, this year's ceremony was almost woman-free (Miley and Taylor don't count). Where was (not exclusive to) Mariah, Beyonce, Mary J., Janet, Madonna, Alicia, and the other Grammy women who usually kill it?

T-Pain won a Grammy. Enough said.

The BEST of Grammys 2009

Jennifer Hudson continues her return to the spotlight by taking home the "Best R&B Album" Grammy and delivering a heart-tugging, emotional performance of her album cut "You Pulled Me Through". I know more than a few people pulled out some Kleenex during that performance.

Alternative band Radiohead delivered a polarizing performance of their song "15 Step" from their Grammy-winning album In Rainbows. I don't even know who they really are, and I kind of feel really stupid for that. That song is definitely on heavy rotation on the iPod.

Grammys avoid complete humiliation by not giving the Jonas Brothers the Best New Artist Grammy, instead, giving to a truly grateful Adele, who considering the nominees, really deserved it.

After events prior to the ceremony pulled Chris Brown and Rihanna from the ceremony, legend Al Green, Justin Timberlake, Keith Urban, and Boyz II Men performed a solid "Let's Stay Together". Also, seeing Justin act like giddy fanboy was very funny.

I may have been the only one, but I was certainly amused by Katy Perry's performance of "I Kissed a Girl". I got the fruit thing, and it was a very good vocal from the Grammy-snubbed pop tart.

Not a big country person, but there were two performances that really caught my ear. Sugarland, specifically Jennifer Nettles, got me wanting to get their Grammy-winning single "Stay". Kenny Chesney, who isn't that interesting, also did a good job.

I love tributes! Lil Wayne's homage to New Orleans, John Mayer and B.B. King's salute to the late Bo Diddley, and the "new" Four Tops were definitely standout performances of the night.

 

Leona Goes Empty-Handed, But Looks AMAZING!

So the Grammys further proved their irrelevancy by snubbing the biggest selling new artist in the world, Leona Lewis, but when you look THIS FREAKIN' GOOD, does it really matter?

8:12 - First performance of the night: Keith Urban, Boyz II Men, Justin Timberlake, and Al Green performing "Let's Stay Together". Pretty good combo, producers, But why is Justin there? New album soon?

COMMERCIAL NOTES - I loved that they played "You Pulled Me Through" during Jennifer's win. Favorite song on the album. The Rock was pointless. JT should stick to singing. Whitney looked amazing, sounded like she had gravel for breakfast.

"The Voice" Is Back! Whitney Houston's Pre-Grammy Gala Performance!

 





WHITNEY'S BACK!

The true Queen of Pop made an impressive turn at last night Pre-Grammy Gala, hosted by her mentor Clive Davis.

Whitney started off her set with a mercifully short version of "I Will Always Love You", before launching into a medley that included "I Believe In You and Me", "It's Not Right, But It's Okay" and "I'm Every Woman".

Whitney's voice has developed a rasp to it, which is a bit jarring considering how crystal-clear her voice used to be. Still decalring her career over is a massive underestimation of her abilities; "The Voice" is still there. She just needs to regain some control (sometimes, her voice was all over the place) and confidence (the audience response should surely help).

I believe this night is only the beginning of what could be one of the greatest comebacks in pop history.

Billboard Magazine Crowns Leona Lewis "Top New Artist"

Almost like a middle finger to the Grammy, music industry magazine Billboard, responsible for the Billboard Hot 100, have declared British pop star Leona Lewis the #1 Top New Artist of 2008.

The Brit diva kept Jordin Sparks, Flo Rida, Katy Perry, and OneRepublic from the top of the year-end list, all of which rounded out the Top 5 respectively. Her success is thanks in part to her debut album Spirit and her megasmash "Bleeding Love", which is the biggest seller of the year.

The news comes after Leona's shocking snub from the Best New Artist category at this year's Grammys. It should be noted that only one nominee (Duffy) is in the Top 10 of the list.

One of the lists have to be wrong, right?

Download of the Day 12-09: "Bust Your Windows" by Jazmine Sullivan

There are times, as rare as they may be, when I miss out on a growing force in music. In fact, it took a shocking Grammy nomination for Best New Artist that attuned my ear to Jazmine Sullivan.

I heard her first single and #1 R&B hit "Need U Bad" and it wasn't really my cup of tea. That was months ago. With a Grammy nod in mind, I decided to giver her another shot. This time, I tried her second single, "Bust Your Windows".

As much as I'm still reeling over Leona and Katy's snubs, I have to say that Jazmine's appearance in the category is well-deserved.

"Bust Your Windows" in unlikely anything I have heard from an R&B artist before. The song has an unexpected classical sound provided by a violin, while the heavy beats and hand claps keep the song deliciously rhythmic. Then, there are the lyrics, which are about getting revenge on a cheating lover by, as you would guess, busting the windows out of their car. Jazmine's delivery of the vengeful words are hard to resist; she's full of soul and passion, and her rich, husky voice supports it.

"Bust Your Windows" is a brilliant mesh of classic and contemporary; its a song you can either tango or slow dance to, thanks to its slow-burning groove paired with the surprising string section. If this song is a suggestion of what Sullivan will bring to the table in the future, than I might be rooting for her come February 8th.

Grammy Nominations: My Thoughts (Part 2)

Last night, the 2009 Grammy nominations were announced during a concert televised on CBS. Here are my general thoughts:


- I am very glad that British artists got serious representation this year. Estelle, Adele, Duffy, Leona, and Coldplay all received multiple nominations. Honestly, most of the good music this year came from across the pond. Hopefully, everyone could at least get one Grammy.


- I am a little skeptical over Lil' Wayne's eight nominations, especially in Album of the Year. Yes, it sold a million copies in its first week, but was it really that brilliant? I'm not too sure. I did like the singles released though.


- The Best New Artist category is a farce, just because the Jonas Brothers are nominated.


Later on, I will give my predictions/chances on all the major categories.

2009 Grammy Nominations: My Thoughts (Part 1)

Today, the nominations for 2009 Grammy Nominations were announced. Here are my thoughts on the major categories:

Record of the Year:
Chasing Pavements - Adele
Viva La Vida - Coldplay
Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis
Paper Planes - M.I.A
Please Read The Letter - Alison Krauss and Robert Plant

This is the most solid and diverse category of the whole bunch. Adele is definitely a pleasant surprise, Leona and Coldplay were expected, M.I.A was completely out of left field (in a good way), and Robert and Alison are a nice addition too.

Album of the Year:
Viva La Vida or Death and All Of His Friends - Coldplay
Tha Carter III - Lil' Wayne
Year of the Gentleman - Ne-Yo
Raising Sand - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
In Rainbows - Radiohead

Ne-Yo's nomination was an absolute shock, but I liked the album, so I'm happy for him. Lil' Wayne wasn't surprising, since his album was universally praised and sold 1 million in a week. Coldplay's great, and I have no comment on the other two since I'm unfamiliar. Another solid category.

I'm Yours - Jason Mraz
Love Song - Sara Bareilles
Viva La Vida - Coldplay

Honestly, the entire category is a surprise. Another nod for Adele and Coldplay, Estelle's and Sara's first so far, and a big surprise with Jason Mraz. As much as I want to replace one, I think all of them are deserving.

This category is an absolute travesty. I am happy for Adele and Duffy, but there are at least two nominees who should NOT be there. The biggest mistake being the Jonas Brothers. Instead of Leona Lewis, or Katy Perry, or Kate Voegele, you put the freakin' Jonas Brothers? They recorded their first album in 2006! They are nto eligible for this category! It's a disgrace, and if they win, I will boycott the Grammys. I may have to check out Jazmine Sullivan's album considering her nomination. Lady Antebellum are COMPLETELY out of left field here.
