Download of the Day 12/23: F**kin' Perfect by Pink

I read on a music board a week or two ago that they were sick of the new "you're great as you are" message in pop songs as of late. They preferred the mindless dirge that had dominated the charts of the last two years.

Well, that person was right. Pop music, probably in response to the publicity of bullying, has come out in full force trying to promote equality and individuality. Everyone from Katy Perry to Bruno Mars has released a song praising inner beauty and all of that stuff. Of course, the sentiment is appreciated, but it is understandable that all of the "be who you are" singles can be a bit redundant (although that person's suggestion of returning to mindless dirge is NOT recommended by this blog).

Pink thinks everyone is effing perfect to her
Pink, who is currently with child and promoting her Greatest Hits album, is the latest to release a self-esteem anthem. Hers has a little twist, though: she curses, at least in the unedited version.

"F**kin' Perfect" (or "Perfect" for radio stations) has Pink taking her typical Max Martin-produced ballads to a whole new level. The song, which has the singer begging the audience to never think they are less than perfect, is a lot grander in scale than we've seen from her. Along with the guitar-driven melody, there is a lot more orchestration, especially in the chorus, than I've heard in previous Pink records. In fact, the only other Martin production I can think of with such grand orchestration is Avril Lavigne's "Keep Holding On". It really does help elevate the song's strong lyrics about individuality. To keep up with his production, Pink gives some of her best vocals, which isn't much considering her usually high performance. Still, hearing her hit those power notes is always a nice reminder that she is an amazing singer.

At this point in her career, Pink could retire to Tahiti and focus on her family without any attempts on her success. However, it is nice to know that she would much rather be lifting people up with her unique touch. It's that reliability that makes Pink virtually untouchable.

Rating 8 out of 10
