Download of the Day 6/19: "4th of July (Fireworks)" by Kelis

My, my, Kelis has certainly made the transition to electronica better than I ever could've expected.

The singer, known best for "Milkshake" and her former marriage to rapper Nas, is releasing her new album Flesh Tone in the United States in July and has prepped "4th of July (Fireworks" as the second single, after the dance success of the David Guetta-assisted lead single "Acapella", especially in the United Kingdom.

Produced by DJ Ammo, "4th of July" is actually a step up from "Acapella". While that song was all about blistering and heavy electronic beats (not that it's a bad thing), the new single is slinkier and sexier. The synthesized piano and steady handclap in the verses has enough presence to move the bodies, but it's Kelis' voice that's in the forefront. Her lower register, which she uses the most in the verses, is one of the sexiest things I have heard all year.

Once again, Kelis is full of surprises, proving to be a lot more versatile and creative than people give her credit for. It is a risk to completely switch up sounds, but so far, it is breaking ridiculously tasty fruit.

By the way, did I mention the video (posted below) is awesome?

Rating: 8/10 (Download it)
