Download of the Day 6/16: "Dancing On My Own" by Robyn

Everyone loves a good, weepy, electro ballad, right?

Swedish pop star Robyn seems to think so, with the release of "Dancing On My Own", the lead single from her new album Body Talk, Part 1. It worked before, with the sublime 2007 smash "With Every Heartbeat", so it's worth having another go, right?

Of course, especially when the song is an absolute smash in the making!

Swedish singer Robyn is aiming for
tearducts with her new single
"Dancing On My Own"
"Dancing On My Own", over darker, heavier, shimmering electro beats, taps into the sadness of being left alone on the dancefloor while the person you love is with someone else. The coldness of the production and the heartbreak of the lyrics and Robyn's devastating vocals offers a surprisingly emotional effect. The sadness comes off in waves, but there is also a lingering romantic feeling, coming from the song's melancholic danceability. Unrequited love will do that to you sometimes. Anyone looking for the song to reach a euphoric crescendo at some point will be sorely disappointed. Sorry, but Robyn is determined to have you sobbing as you slowly groove to the irresistible disco ballad (I suggest you head over to "All The Lovers" by Kylie after this one).

As you can come to expect from Robyn at this point, "Dancing On My Own" is a spectacular addition to the "sorrowful dance music" collective, which she appears to control with little contention. Everyone's been in the spot that Robyn is in, dancing all by your lonesome.

Isn't this the perfect song to keep you company?

Rating: 8/10 (Download it on iTunes NOW)
