Apple Announces iPhone 4 For June 24th Release

The world is ready to go iPhone-crazy again.

Just when it seemed like everyone's eyes were stuck on the shiny new iPad, Apple CEO Steve Jobs reminded us at today's Worldwide Developer's Conference what really owns the public's hearts (and wallets): iPhone.

The new iteration of the massively popular cell phone is called iPhone 4. The iPhone was leaked two months ago by tech blog Gizmodo, but it didn't stop the oohs and ahhs as Jobs gave the annual keynote speech detailing all of the phone's new features. The most hyped of them is what is called the "Retina Display", an extremely clear, crisp screen that Engadget declaring it "outrageous". The biggest change is the phone's steelier new look, complete with a flat back and clean-cut edges (with the antenna built in). There is also a front-facing camera, finally allowing for video calling on the iPhone (administered through the FaceTime program). The back camera has been updated to 5 megapixels with flash.

As with every iPhone update, this one boasts better battery life, with up to 300 hours of standby time. There are no size upgrades this time, surprising considering that the iPod touch was bumped up to 64GB last year. The pricing remains the same as the iPhone 3GS, while the 8GB 3GS will be sold for $100. iPhone 4 will be released on June 24th in selected countries, including the US and the UK, while full rollout will be complete by September.

Three days before the release date of iPhone 4 comes the release of iOS 4, the renamed software update for iPhone 3G and 3GS users, as well as iPod touch users. iOS 4 brings the much-desired feature of multitasking. the iPad will receive the update later this year.
