R.I.P.: Designing Women Star Dixie Carter Dead at 70

Incredibly sad news for the television industry.

Dixie Carter, the star of classic 80's and 90's sitcom Designing Women, has passed away at the age of 70. The TV icon died yesterday morning of undisclosed causes, her publicist confirmed. She recently portrayed the evil mother of Orson Hodge on ABC's Desperate Housewives, a role that garnered an Emmy nomination.

On Designing Women, Carter played Southern interior designer Julia Sugarbaker. The show lasted from 1986 to 1993, and is currently in syndication. Carter was married to fellow actor Hal Holbrook, who released a statement declaring her death a "terrible blow" to the family and asking for privacy. She also leaves behind two children from a previous marriage.
