Kelly Rowland's a "Commander", and We Must Obey

When David Guetta picked Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland for the song "When Love Takes Over", it was a huge head-scratcher. Not that she wasn't capable or anything, but it seemed so far out of left field, considering how different their styles were.

Clearly Guetta has good instincts, because the song was a worldwide smash (and by worldwide, I mean everywhere but the United States) and is one of my favorite songs from last year. Kelly has realized this as well, because she has tapped him to produce her new album, and the lead single "Commander".

Anyone expecting expecting a continuation of "When Love Takes Over" might be disappointed. If that song was a roar, then "Commander" is a bark. The production is surprisingly sparse compared to Guetta's previous work. That duly noted, the song is still a banging dancefloor romp, with one of the best choruses I have heard all year. If you're not on the dancefloor when Kelly sings with full bombast, "I command you to dance!", you might just be a zombie or something. Speaking of Kelly's singing, she has definitely found her niche, because she sounds like the diva that she could never be beneath Beyonce's expansive shadow. It's exciting to see someone deserving finally getting their chance to shine, especially with amazing songs like the last two she's released.

Kelly may be used to being someone else's soldier, but her new role as "commander" is suited much better for her. If she keeps releasing songs like these, she can issue as mand commands as she likes, and we will obey.
