The five piece, consisting of Vanessa, Rochelle, Mollie, Frankie, and Uda, seemed like a terribly futile attempt to replace either the Sugababes or Girls Aloud. Somehow, the group carved out their own little place, proving to be viable with hit smashes like "Up" and "Issues". Now, the girls are on track to score their first-ever UK number one with their cheeky reboot of the Depeche Mode classic "Just Can't Get Enough".
All of this success prompted me to find their commercially lackluster debut Chasing Lights. Coincidentally, the first song I listened to was the title track. It's the closest the group comes to a "Call The Shots", and its much more interesting than their current single "Issues". It's lush with guitar fuzzed with warm synth. The vocals are surprisingly strong, although a bit nondescript (the only one I can recognize is Vanessa). While songs about giving up on broken relationships are not new, "Chasing Lights" has a catchy chorus and lovable hook that brings something new to the concept.
"Chasing Lights" should be a single, and if it doesn't, hopefully people buy the album and hear this spectacular ode to moving on. If "Up" didn't convince pop skeptics that the girld are staying around, then pop in their CD and soon, they'll be "chasing" them around for a new LP.
