Download of the Day 12-31: "Signs" by Bloc Party

Intimacy cover

This song will probably be forever immortalized by Gossip Girl fans as the song playing when Chuck finally broke down to Blair.

The musical director of the teen drama is a genius, because they couldn't have picked a more fitting song for such an emotional scene.

"Signs", a song from British indie band Bloc Party, is a gentle ballad about the feelings associated with loss. Regret, desperation, reminiscence, denial, and everything in between are explored with a heart-tugging, gentle intensity that would leave the weakest of people emotionally destroyed. The innocent chiming that serves as the main backing emanates this aura of child-like innocence. The aura fades quickly when you listen to the lead singer's sorrow-filled tone as he sings some of the most mournful lyrics you'll probably ever hear. In fact, the level of melancholy reminds me of the exceptional "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". The song has a silent power, one you definitely don't acknowledge until you realize you have played it 30 times straight because of its unbelievable fluidity.

"Signs" is one of those songs that are perfect for soundtracks; despite its meaning, the song is universal. Regardless of musical taste, everyone can connect to the song. It's absolutely brilliant, and I hope we hear more of them in the new year.
