DOTD Holiday Edition 12-08: "River" by Sarah McLachlan
Many artists have covered the Joni Mitchell holiday classic "River" since its 1971 release. The song, which is about someone wanting to escape the emotional turmoil of a breakup by way of a frozen river, has resonated with millions over the years, making it a favorite for cover versions. Everyone from James Taylor to Sara Bareilles have delivered their take, but there is one that truly shines above all.
In 2006, Sarah McLachlan covered the song for her holiday album Wintersong. Her version was simple and understated, while still packing that oh-so-important Christmas punch. A master of delivering emotional vocal performances (see "Angel", "Fallen", and "I Will Remember You" for reference), McLachlan's gentle interpretation is a classic example that sometimes, bombast isn't needed to deliver a message.
