DOTD UK 11/22: "Better" by Boyzone
Controvery courts interest.
It's not the reason why I found Boyzone's "Better" (that was a YouTube accident), but I'm sure it will be a major reason why this song gets a lot of attention.
Putting the video aside for a minute, there is actually some good in this track.
It should be noted that this song is actually a cover; Tom Baxter released this in January. That means Boyzone shouldn't be blamed for the song's blandness (although some will argue blandness is their trademark). It's a nice song and all, but there is really nothing special about it. It's about a relationship that has gotten "better". It's an admitted step-down from "Love You Anyway", which I'm warming up to, by the way. When a song is this ordinary, that means the vocals have to be top-notch.
Lead singers Ronan Keating and Stephen Gately deliver some pretty powerful vocals on this track, and its a definite that both have become better singers since the group's hiatus in 1999. Especially Stephen, who has eradicated that annoying nasal warble from "No Matter What" and allowed his great vocal range to shine through. Ronan, the obvious lead of the whole group, sounds amazing. The richness of his lower register compliments Stephen's upper register perfectly, and that definitely makes this song great.
It's going to be an interesting chart situation for them as they go head-to-head with Take That and Leona Lewis, but Boyzone should definitely be happy with a comeback which has delivered another good single.
