Song Review: "Love Lockdown" by Kanye West

“Love Lockdown” cover
I've been a little behind with this song.

I wasn't paying attention when Kanye West performed it at the VMAs last month. I didn't download it when the other 150+K did to push the song onto the chart at #3. I barely watched the video.

Now, a month after its release, I added it on iTunes.

First off, Kanye singing is just wrong. He is an excellent rapper, and if he did his homework, he should know that rappers who sing usually don't work (Ja Rule, for instance). In fact, his voice is so unremarkable that he has to pull a T-Pain and Auto-Tune the hell out of the song. It can be either innovative or annoying, depending on your mood. The repetitive lyrics don't make it any better.

Honestly, that's the only gripe I have with the song. Everything else is awesome. The arrangement, the soft beat during the verse, the short, repeating piano melody, and those kick-ass Taiko drums during the chorus are truly superb, showing how far Kanye is willing to push the envelope of hip-hop. The song, without a doubt, is his most ambitious and interesting song to date.

His voice just sucks.
