The Dark Knight Scores Biggest Opening Weekend Ever!

The most anticipated movie of the year lived up to the hype, both critically and commercially.

Over its first weekend of release, The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale as Batman and the fantastic Heath Ledger as the Joker, brought in astounding $155 million at the box office, breaking the record set by Spider-Man 3 to have the highest grossing weekend in movie history. The movie smashed all kinds of attendance records, including those for 12 am showings and opening day showings.

TDK is currently one of the best-reviewed films of the year, with a 94% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Check the post before to see my review of the film.

Since most people went to see TDK, attendance for other films were quite abysmal. The only other film ballsy enough to tackle Batman was Mamma Mia!, which grossed $27 million to debut at #2. At #3 is Hancock, which brought in $14 million.
