I never thought it would happen.
Many (myself included) laughed off the possibility of a New Kids On The Block reunion. The group, which disbanded in 1994 after their album flopped, seemed like an improbable choice for a comeback. Their last major hit was 18 years ago (Step by Step, which hit #1). One of the members claimed there would never be a reunion. The last attempt to reunite for a VH1 special was a disaster. Quite frankly, NKOTB was history.
Shows how much we all know.
This week, the newly formed boy band released their latest single "Summertime" on iTunes. Within hours, the song shot up into the Top 20, with a current position of #15 (behind my fav Duffy). They currently have more albums in iTunes Top Albums chart than any other artist (two greatest hits albums at #23 and #62 and their blockbuster sophomore record Hangin' Tough at #100). The newer fans must be brushing up their history.
And what a history it is.
They are one of the most successful boy bands of all time, even after the teen-pop craze of the late 90's that spawned successors *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. In their heyday, they had 9 Top 10 singles and 3 chart-toppers, more than both of the other groups. They sold over 62 million albums worldwide, and made more in 1990 than both Madonna and Michael Jackson.
Chances are they will never reach that insane level of success that did back in the day, but the country, whether people like it or not, is slowly being swept up in the NKOTB craze like we were 20 years ago.
