Download of the Day 5/24: Spotlight by Jennifer Hudson
Now THIS is a Jennifer Hudson single!
After "All Dressed Up In Love" was leaked, I was worried about her. My fears were premature.
The lead single from her eponymous debut album, "Spotlight", will officially be released on June 10th, and I HEAVILY recommend downloading it.
The Stargate-produced track is almost too perfect for J-Hud. She wisely restrains her vocals in the beginning and middle of the song, allowing the listener to enjoy both the tone of her voice and the great lyrics. In an era where lyrical content is left to be desired, "Spotlight" delivers clever, but meaningful lyrics. One line that stands out is "Are you a guard in a prison maximum security?" The song is about a woman in a oppressive relationship, with the "spotlight" referring to the overbearing jealousy the boyfriend has. The lyrics are easy to relate if you've been that kind of relationship, so I am sure "Spotlight" is going to become the women's anthem for the next few months.
For those who love Jennifer's glass-breaking power, you may be just a little disappointed. Although, she does touch the vocal peak toward the end, she never goes all the way there, like she did in her Oscar-winning role in Dreamgirls. I think it was smart she didn't, but there are some wanting her to blow the speakers out with her voice.
All-in-all, "Spotlight" is a great first single for Jennifer Hudson. The song, like many other Stargate tracks, will definitely have staying power on radio. If this is a sign of things to come, then Jennifer Hudson's debut will be spectacular (it will be released on September 30th).
Once again, Jennifer Hudson proves that losing American Idol has more benefits than you would think (here that David Archuleta?)
