Charlton Heston Passes Away at 84

image Iconic film actor Charlton Heston died  yesterday, with his wife Lydia Clarke by his side.

Charlton Heston was one of the most respected actors in Hollywood, and had appeared in some of the most important films in history. In 1959, he played the role of Judah Ben-Hur in the epic Ben Hur. The film won him an Oscar for Best Actor. He was also famous for his leading role as Moses in The Ten Commandments.

Among his movie work, Heston was known for his championing of conservative causes, including gun rights. From 1998 to 2003, he was the president of the National Rifle Association. He also launched a campaign against rap music and other things he considered morally-crippling. He made headlines in 1992 when he attended a Time Warner shareholders meeting and read aloud the lyric to Ice-T's "Copy Killer" song, leading to his dismissal from the label. Despite his later conservative slant, in the 60s, he was a staunch supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, working alongside Martin Luther King Jr.

In recent years, Heston has suffered from many health problems, including a terrible bout of pneumonia in 2006. In 2002, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's like symptoms.
