American Idol Top 7: Who Can "Carey" A Tune?

image Well, I've got to say, this was NOT the disaster I thought it was going to be. In fact, I wouldn't mind another taste of MC songs. They have a ton to choose from.

Here is the rundown:

David Archuleta - A very predictable choice (it was either going to be that or "Hero"). It was a very good vocal, but I wished he had mixed the song up a bit. Of course, the alternative was to sing something less inspirational and more fun.

Carly Smithson - Doing "Without You" is a large order. Kelly Clarkson did it the first season and wowed the judges. Now, Carly does it. I was, honestly, terribly underwhelmed. I was expecting a real show-stopping performance. Instead, I was almost waiting for it to be over.

Syesha Mercado - She chose one of my favorite Mariah songs, "Vanishing", from her first album. I believe she did a great job with the song, all things considered.

Brooke White - So, she chose "Hero". I really really liked this performance. I loved that she put her folksy spin on it, and I thought it was one of her most vocally challenging songs to date. Although she did lose focus towards the end (the song was sped up for some reason), you can tell she put her heart into the performance

Kristy Lee Cook - I have been down on Kristy Lee since the beginning, so imagine my surprise when she flourishes during Mariah week! It was arguably her best performance to date, and (shock) one of my favorite performances of the night.

David Cook - His creativity is mind-blowing. I was racking my brain of MC knowledge, trying to figure out what he would choose. Always Be My Baby NEVER crossed my mind. It was absolute genius. This NEEDS to be on his album, win or lose. Best of the Night. (BTW, expect it to be an AI Download of the Day).

Jason Castro - Another surprising choice. I thought it was pretty good. It wasn't very strong vocally, but I liked the mood that it set and it was a very daring choice.

The Bottom Three: Syesha, Brooke, Carly

The Top Three: Jason, David, David

Note: Tonight was proof that Mariah Carey is one of the best songwriters in pop history. The contestants showed how versatile her songs can be.
