EW.com (and Twitter for that matter) is reporting that Christopher Meloni will be leaving Law and Order: Special Victims Unit next season.
Meloni, who plays Det. Eliot Stabler, turned down what was called a "generous" salary from NBC. He has been on the show for all of its twelve seasons. His departure comes days after it was revealed Mariska Hargitay would be stepping down from her position as lead actor for a lighter workload. Entertainment Weekly also reported on rumors that the show's producers wanted Jennifer Love Hewitt to act as a replacement for Hargitay, after a previously successful guest stint that garner her an Emmy nomination.
With two of the show's flagship stars virtually gone, it doesn't particularly make sense to continue the show. However, I certainly wouldn't be against the upgrading of Tamara Tunie (the medical examiner and As The World Turns' Jessica) as one of the leads. I honestly don't know who could replace Meloni, though. He and Hargitay had some of the best onscreen chemistry out there, so it would have be a pretty amazing duo to try and live up to that.
Good luck to Christopher Meloni in his future endeavors (and know that you have been repeatedly robbed of an Emmy!)
