Unless you are a really terrible artist or producer, digging through the past and updating its sound usually has pretty awesome results.
Just ask Janelle Monáe.
The R&B songstress released her debut album The ArchAndroid last month, with critics declaring it one of the best of the year. Leading off the album is "Tightrope", a throwback to the 70's featuring Outkast's Big Boi. It's interesting that he features on the track, since the song bares a noticeable resemblance to their classic hit "Hey Ya!" Hopefully, this song will reach that song's ubiquity on the radio, because it deserves to be a smash hit. "Tightrope" is a quirky, funky little number that's accessible to the adults who remember the days of platform boots and the kids who laugh at the idea of them. Monáe is not a powerhouse vocalist, but her voice full of cool, energetic personality that will make you want to "tip on the tightrope" with her. If not, it will at least get you going on the dancefloor.
Pop music today is definitely a tightrope, but if this song is any indication, Janelle Monáe will manage it just fine.
