Download of the Day 4/26: "Acapella" by Kelis

Kelis may have brought the boys to the yard with her "Milkshake", but with her new single, she's fitting to keep there, dancing no less.

The R&B singer (and ex-wife of Nas) has teamed up Black Eyed Peas front will.i.am and French DJ David Guetta on "Acapella", a smashing club-filling banger that also serves as a tribute to her son, Knight. Well, motherly love has never sounded this sweet, thanks to some fresh, synthy, thumping, kick-ass production from Guetta and Kelis' icy-yet-soulful vocals. Unlike many club-ready songs these days, the lyrics actually have some substance behind them, as Kelis uses music as a metaphor for her newfound life. The line "our symphony's the only song to sing" is quite touching, even though it's blanketed beneath some heavy synths.

While is a huge departure from some of her past hits, it's a believable progression for Kelis. It takes a real artist to completely switch genres without sounding completely inauthentic. Then again, Kelis doesn't really give a damn anaway, "since she's a boss".

Brandon says: 9 out of 10 (iTunes it... now)

P.S. Sorry about the Kelis song puns. If you didn't recognize them, don't worry about it :)
