Classic Performances: Whitney Houston Performs Medley at 1994 American Music Awards

Back in 1994, Whitney Houston could do wrong. That's because she graduated from pop princess to global icon thanks to the massive success of "I Will Always Love You" and The Boydguard. The critical darling was adored so much that the American Music Awards, produced by TV legend Dick Clark, gave her a 10 minute performance slot.

Whitney sang three songs at the ceremony; "I Love You Porgy" from Porgy & Bess, future Jennifer Hudson staple "And I Am Telling You", and her Top 5 Bodyguard smash "I Have Nothing". As the diva entered the final stretch of the last song, it was clear this was more than a performance. This was a showcase, no, a masterclass in the art of performance. There are very few people on this Earth who are able to sing with so much power, grace, elegance, and energy that left an audience in complete awe.

Before the crack drama, the domestic abuse, and the poor album sales, Whitney was in a class all by herself. Here's to hoping that she can reach that class again with her much-anticipated album this year.
