Download of the Day (9-21): Ne-Yo's "Mad"

Year of the Gentleman coverNe-Yo's new album Year of the Gentleman is a triumph for the sole reason that nearly every song is single-worthy. The last album I remember being like that was Girls Aloud's Tangled Up.

After "Miss Independent" finishes up on the charts, this song HAS to be next!

"Mad", another collaboration with Swedish mega-producers Stargate, is simply a gorgeous song. While it does have similar structures to other songs by the producers (Take a Bow and With You, for instance), it still sounds absolutely fresh and an easy hit on radio. While it's piano-driven, there are other distinctive sounds that definitely make it sounds different and interesting.

Ne-Yo is a masterclass when it comes to songwriting, so its no surprise that this song has amazing lyrics. The song is about a lover's quarrel, but he pleads for a resolution, so they won't go to bed mad. "Mad" is a perfect example of Ne-Yo's maturing as a lyricist. His ability to craft pop smashes while maintaining a sensitive, vulnerable point of view is reminiscent of a musical prodigy. It only makes him one of the most exciting artists in music today (and tomorrow). On top of being a lyrical mastermind, he also has a damn good voice. His delivery of the song is passionate and stirring, and elevates the song even higher.

Ne-Yo is, without a doubt, the smartest artist in music. It would prove his intelligence if he released this song next. It's truly one of his best ever.
