Along with my one of my good friends, Justin Forman, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, turns 50 today.
Regardless of the tabloid stories and the quirky behavior, there is no contesting the fact that Michael Jackson is one of the most influential forces in music history. Even at a half-century old, he is more relevant to pop than all of his successors, combined. His style is iconic and his music is timeless, and there is no music star right now who can match his level of celebrity, and I doubt there will be ever again.
An example of his insane popularity, here is Michael performing in Bucharest, Romania in 1997:
I have never seen fans react like that ever during a concert. It's a Jackson concert staple; fans passing out and crying.
Its hard to believe that 26 years ago on the Motown 25 television special, Michael Jackson delivered another electrifying performance that would become a piece of television history:
Here's to you Michael, the absolute King of Pop. A legend. A musical genius. Happy Birthday!
