If you aren't planning on buying the album (you REALLY should), then these are truly the standout songs:
Side Effects - I believe this is one of Mariah's best songs to date that will probably not become a single, on par with "Forever". The best thing about this record is the lyrics. For the first time in this decade, Mariah REALLY dug deep inside herself and pulled out these passionate and powerful words about a woman dealing with an abusive relationship. Many believe it is about her ex-husband Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola, and with the surprising conviction that she sings, its very plausible. Regardless of the intended target, this is Mariah's most personal song, and I giver her immense credit for pushing aside her usually saccharine lyrics for some with grit. Rating: 8.5/10
Bye Bye - Mariah hasn't really released a truly inspirational song that is universal since Hero is 1993. Well, the streak is over with Bye Bye. The song, presumably about her late father, is a powerful piece of music. It definitely has the potential to be a life-saving song, just like Hero. Except for the beat (I wish she would just make a melodic ballad with no semblance of hip-hop influences at all), its a near perfect Mariah song. Rating: 8.5/10
