I said I would in my recap of the Boys night on Tuesday, so here is my little present for the (almost) amazing Top 12.
The definitive list of who and what not to sing in the competition!
First things first, here are the artists that you should definitely, no question, steer clear of. It doesn't matter how ambitious you are or how great you can sing, these artists are mostly off-limits, unless you want to be humiliated in front of 30 million viewers who can vote for someone else and you'll go home, of course:
Whitney Houston (Please Idols, DO NOT SING HER EVER AGAIN!!!)
Mariah Carey
Celine Dion
Freddie Mercury of Queen
Barbara Streisand
Michael Jackson
Stevie Wonder
Why shouldn't you sing these artists? Why should you run in the other direction whenever their songs land in your lap? These artists are legendary, iconic. Any attempt to mimic one of their performances will simply be a cheap imitation that will be easily pointed out by the judges. Save yourself the humiliation and simply avoid their songs.
In the next installment, the Top 20 songs you should NEVER EVER EVER sing EVER AGAIN!!

A good list, but you have left many out.
Good list but kind of obvious choices. There's an entire website dedicated to this topic, called (fittingly) WhatNotToSing.com. Everyone may be sick of Whitney and Celine songs on Idol, but the site shows that singers do better than you'd expect with their songs, which is probably why contestants keep choosing them. They also noted that this was the first time anyone ever went home singing Queen (except for S5's Queen Night). They say that the two worst artists to sing have actually been Brian McKnight and LeAnn Rimes.
