New Music Alert: "Hold My Hand" by Akon featuring Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson is back in business!
Sort of...
While MJ works on his new album, he and Akon have teamed up on "Hold My Hand", as song for Akon's upcoming record Acquitted.
Check it out below:
Greatest Scenes: Jerry Maguire's "You Had Me At Hello"
Remember when Tom Cruise was likable?
It's a foreign concept these days, but back in 1996, pretty much everyone loved Tom Cruise. Women wanted him, men wanted to be him, that whole deal. His likability was most evident in one of his best works to date, Jerry Maguire. The film was about a sports agent who struggles with love and his high-strung (and only) client Rod Tidwell (played fantastically by Cuba Gooding Jr.).
There are many memorable moments in this movie (I'll discuss another in a later post), but the one of the last scenes remains a huge standout. Not only did it give Tom Cruise one of his greatest monologues, it also gave the world two of the schmaltziest romantic lines in history. Even if you've never seen Jerry Maguire, you've probably heard or said the following two lines:
"You complete me"
"You had me at hello"
Facing a divorce after a quickie marriage, Jerry flies home to face his wife Dorothy, who is the middle of a married women's party. There, in front of everyone, Jerry delivers a fantastic appeal to save his marriage. Tom Cruise has never been more vulnerable in a movie I've seen him in. It was one of those moments where you forgot you were watching the biggest movie star on the planet (at the time) and believed you were watching a teary-eyed man fight for the woman that he loves. It was intense, it was fantastic, and it helped solidify the belief that Tom Cruise was awesome.
Just after he dropped the "You complete me" bomb, Dorothy interrupted his rambling with one of her own, which would go on to be one of the most quotable romantic lines in the history of cinema. After saying "You had me at hello" twice, Jerry runs over to her and pulls her into a hug.
That line was most likely responsible for putting Renee Zellweger on the map. It was the inspiration for Kenny Chesney's hit "You Had Me From Hello". It helped raise the bar for romance.
Those two lines, performed amazingly by Cruise and Zellweger, helped make Jerry Maguire a special (and Oscar-nominated) movie that remains a standard in the dramedy genre.
If you ever want to remember why you ever like Tom Cruise in the first place, watch this clip, and maybe you will forget the couch-jumping, the bitching at Brooke Shields, the craziness with Matt Lauer, the Scientology video, and Katie Holmes/Suri mess for a few minutes.
Oscar Buzz Builds For Heath Ledger
It could be possible that the little gold statue that eluded the late Heath Ledger in life could be awarded to him in death. There has been significant Oscar buzz building for Heath Ledger's role as The Joker in The Dark Knight, one of the last films he performed in. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine stoked the fire in one of the first reviews, saying, "If there's a movement to get him the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch won for 1976's Network, sign me up." He goes on to call Ledger "mad-crazy-brilliant".
Ledger's co-stars agree with the buzz. During a press event for the film this past weekend, castmembers like Aaron Eckhart and Gary Oldman have expressed desire to see a nomination come his way. Oldman said that "The Academy tends to overlook movies like this, but this acting is so good it's going to be very hard for them to avoid it."
Heath Ledger was previously nominated for a Best Actor Oscar in 2005 for his role in Brokeback Mountain. He lost that year to Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Capote. If he were to be nominated for an Oscar this year, he would be the first from a superhero film to receive one. Usually, superhero films and their actors are ignored by the Academy. One possible reason is because many of them are released outside of the official Oscar season, which runs in the last months of the year. If an Oscar is awarded to a superhero film, it is usually in the smaller categories (such as Visual Effects, which Spider-Man 2 won in 2004). His potential nomination would be the first posthumous nomination for an actor since Massimo Troisi in 1994. Other posthumous nominees include Spencer Tracy, the aforementioned Peter Finch, and James Dean.
Heath Ledger died on January 22nd, 2008, after an accidental overdose of prescription medications. Prior to his death, Heath had complained of insomnia related to the hard work put into The Dark Knight and I'm Not There.
If his performance is as fanatastic as the reviews are saying, I believe that an Oscar nod would be very much deserving, and a fantastic tribute to an actor taken way too soon.

Box Office Report: Wall-E Kicks Angelina's Butt
Chances are, you either saw a little robot clean up Earth or Angelina Jolie kick some ass. Chances are, many of you saw the robot.
Wall-E, the latest Pixar film, topped this weekend's box office, grossing an estimated $62 million at 3,992 theaters. Wanted, the assassin film starring Jolie, brought in $51 million at 3,175 theaters. Wanted did beat Wall-E in terms of theater averages by a margin of $500 per theater.
At #3 is Get Smart starring Anne Hathaway and Steve Carrell, which brought in $20 million to bring its total gross to $77 million.

The "Irreplaceable" Clones: Part 1

Back in 2006, "Irreplaceable" was the biggest song on the face of the earth. It stayed on the top of the US charts for 10 weeks, and was the biggest-selling single of 2007. The song was lauded by critics for its (at the time) innovative use of acoustic guitar in an R&B/pop song. The main producers, Stargate from Sweden, became the most sought-after production team in the country. What does that usually mean?
A lot of the same.
Boy, did we get that. Almost every major pop song of the last year was produced by Stargate and sounded like Beyonce's megahit. Today, we look at the "Irreplaceable" Clones, using the Irreplac-o-meter. The clones rank on a scale from 1 to 10.
So, let's begin!
Take A Bow by Rihanna - Rihanna scored her third chart-topper with this song, off the re-release of her "Good Girl Gone Bad". The percussion and piano-driven ballad has that distinctive Stargate sound, especially the handclaps in the background. However, its distinctive enough to not be deemed a complete Beyonce knock-off. Irreplac-o-meter Rating: 5
With You by Chris Brown - Ladies and gents, I present you with the first real clone. Really, all they did was change the words and the melody a bit, and plop Chris Brown in front of the microphone. Everything from the acoustic guitar to the claps is present in this song. It have the opposite sentiment of Bey's song, its very much a knock-off. It's like the male version of "Irreplaceable". Can you blame him, though? It went to #2 on the charts. Irreplac-o-meter Rating: 10
Tattoo by Jordin Sparks - Critics across the board called this an "Irreplaceable" copy, and I have to agree. Although it has a different melodic base, the Stargate staples are all there; the guitar and the handclaps. Those elements ultimately tie the song back to Beyonce's big hit. It wasn't a bad thing for Jordin though; after a disappointing chart showing with "This Is My Now", "Tattoo" scored Jordin her first top 10 single, peaking at #8. Irreplac-o-meter Rating: 7
Look out for Part 2 coming next!
DOTD You Decide: Black and Gold by Sam Sparro
I have been trying to think of something to write about this song, but I decided to let you all decide whether you love or hate this song. Here is the song:
Vote here on whether you like the song or not:

Gates, who is 52, is retiring to focus full-time on his philanthropic work. His foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, works to end poverty and make education better across the globe.
Leona Performs "Better In Time" at Mandela Concert
Amy Winehouse at Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday Concert
Amy Winehouse performed at Nelson Mandela's birthday concert today, and surprisingly, wasn't a disaster.
She performed "Rehab" and "Valerie" despite revelations that she was suffering from the early stages of emphysema last weekend.
When she performed "Rehab", she looked and sounded bored (I'm sure a part of her regrets making that song now). She kind of didn't sing some of the words, but her voice was in pretty good shape. It wasn't as good as the Grammys, but it was MUCH better than Rock In Rio.
Things changed when she sang "Valerie". She looked more lively and she she put far more energy into the song than she did the last. Dare I say it, it was actually a really good performance. It definitely exceeded my expectations (although it should be said there were very low).
I hope this performance signals a changing in tides for Amy. I won't call it a comeback, but it definitely showed she still had something.
Leona Lewis at Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday Concert
Leona's Back in iTunes Top 10!
Leona Lewis' megahit single "Bleeding Love" has re-entered the Top 10 on iTunes, 4 MONTHS after it first entered. It began dropping last week, but it has begun to bounce back!
The song has outlasted Mariah, Usher, Lil' Wayne, and Madonna on the iTunes chart.
Get it, Leona!

Classic Download of the Day: Hold On by En Vogue

In celebration of their triumphant return to the music world on Tuesday's BET Awards, I have dedicated a DOTD post to them.
En Vogue, one of the best girl groups ever, have many hits, but there is one classic that sticks out in my mind as their best, their first single "Hold On".
From the acapella intro, the listener knew they were listening to something special. The harmonies were graceful and smooth, and they easily channeled the Motown vibe. A stranger to the song would they would follow through on the throwback, the song jumps into the burgeoning New Jack Swing sound of the day.
"Hold On" is funky, cool, and a perfect example of early 90's music at its true best. En Vogue, after this smash hit #1 on the R&B charts and #2 on the Pop charts, went on to have more success. Their next album "Funky Divas" (perfect description) went multi-platinum and spawned a ridiculous amount of hit singles. Unfortunately, Dawn Robinson left the group and they were never the same.
With their reunion on the BET Awards, rumors are buzzing that there could be a full-blown comeback. I am definitely hoping for one; its time the real girl group come back and show the others how its done (coughDanityKanecough)

My Favorite Scenes: Jon Stewart on CNN's Crossfire
Genius.
There really is no other term to describe Daily Show host Jon Stewart's appearance on Crossfire in 2004. It was genius because, in 11 minutes flat, he made Tucker Carlson look stupid, questioned the ethics of the media, humiliated CNN, and got the program canceled.
When Stewart appeared on the former CNN program, they assumed he would make jokes about politics, much like he does on his own show. Instead, he took the opportunity to criticize Crossfire and its hosts of what he called "partisan hackery". He criticized the hosts, most notably Tucker Carlson, of failing in its responsibility to inform viewers about politics using debate.
Carlson, obviously embarrassed, tried turning the tables on Stewart by criticizing the questions he asked 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, but Stewart argued that his show didn't have the responsibility of asking the hard-hitting questions. As Stewart continued bitching out Carlson and the show, he responded "I thought you were gonna be funny". His comeback? "Sorry, I'm not going to be your monkey".
A few months after that episode, CNN pulled the plug on Crossfire and Tucker Carlson. Surprisingly, they did reference that episode in their decision-making.
While Tucker Carlson has bounced back from that disaster, I don't think anyone will forget how Jon Stewart kicked his ass, on his own show.
Hot 100 Update: Katy Kisses Her Way To Top!
Along with the #1 album (Coldplay), they have the #1 single in the country, thanks to Katy Perry and her hot single "I Kissed A Girl". Thanks to rapidly increasing airplay and sales, Katy scores her first chart-topper (hopefully not her last). Thanks to digital sales, Hot N Cold also debuts on the chart at #88.
Coldplay, meanwhile, plummets down 6 spots after scoring their first #1 last week, despite the release of their album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.
Big single releases meant big chart jumps for Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, and the Camp Rock soundtrack. Rihanna's single "Disturbia" debuts at #18, while Miley Cyrus scores her second top 10 single with "7 Things" at #10. The soundtrack from Camp Rock saw many chart debuts, most notably "This Is Me". The duet by Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas charts at #11. "Play My Music", sung by the Jonas Brothers, debuts at #20, making it their second-highest charting single behind "SOS".

BWU Hot 25: Katy Perry Holds #1, Pussycat Dolls Shoots Up

This week's BWU Hot 25 sees many debuts and re-entries, as 6 songs break into the chart, including 2 songs into the top 5!
Katy Perry holds the #1 spot with "I Kissed A Girl", which is posed to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, for a second week. She also sees the highest debut of the week with "Hot N Cold", which saw a #2 placing on the Interest chart and a #3 placing on Song Play. Since its creation, she is the first artist to have two songs in the Top 5 of the chart.
The Pussycat Dolls also break a record this week for having the highest jump up the chart. "When I Grow Up", which debuted at #24 last week because of high interest, climbs 22 places to the #2 spot, thanks to topping the Song Play chart.
The next highest debut belongs to the Jonas Brothers, who come in at #4 with "Burnin' Up". The song shot up the Interest chart because of its premiere last weekend and it being the first selection for the Brandon Lewis Seal of Approval, which shows support for songs I normally wouldn't like. It also debuts at #4 on the Song Play chart.
This week's Rebound belongs to Chris Brown, who suffered the chart's biggest drop last week with "Forever". The single fell 13 places to the bottom of the chart last week, but moves up 4 places to #21. His other single "Take You Down", moves up to #13.

Video Premiere: Spotlight by Jennifer Hudson
I thought she looked fantastic in the video (liked the new hair). There wasn't much to the video, but I guess its because its her first. Unfortunately, I wasn't really impressed with it.
Chris Brown and Ciara at the BET Awards 2008
Chris Brown delivered a REALLY boring performance of "With You" at last night's BET Awards. Just when you thought it was over, he switched it over to "Take You Down", his top 10 single on the R&B charts. Well, he didn't sing it, but can you blame him? It would be pretty distracting to sing when Ciara, dressed like a dominatrix/sex goddess, is dropping it above you!
I don't understand why she came out, but I'm glad she did. Ciara SAVED that performance, because without her, it would've been completely forgettable (and a bit gross, depending on your gender or preference). Their chemistry was on point. I loved how Rihanna looked amused when the camera went to her, because apart of me knows she was just a little bit ticked off that Ciara was practically having sex with her "friend" onstage. Also, I would be nervous if I was Chris, because I know 50 wasn't happy. In fact, I can almost see him talking to reporter, saying how Chris is wack and not enough man for Ciara, launching another feud.
Here is the video:
2008 BET Awards: The Highlights
The best of the night was Alicia Keys and her tribute to 90s girl groups. After performing her new single "Teenage Love Affair", she brought out SWV to sing their number-one hit "Weak". After that, En Vogue (ALL 4 original members) came out sang their hit "Hold On". Finally, TLC came out and sang "Waterfalls".
I loved this performance. Seeing SWV, En Vogue, and TLC together reminded me how good music was last decade. It was really good seeing the original members of En Vogue together, including the amazing Dawn Robinson. All of the performances were great, although T-Boz was a bit raspier than usual. I have heard she was sick, so get better T-Boz! Overall, it was EASILY the best of the night (BTW, did anyone wish the cameras would go over to Usher and see his reaction? I did).
The other noteworthy performance of the night belonged to Ne-Yo. While contemporaries Usher and Chris Brown (save for a later post) delivered boring performances, Ne-Yo brought it out like never before. His performance was sleek and cool, much like himself. It made me remember that "Closer" was a great song (it made me revise the charts for this week).

Download of the Day 6/28: Disturbia by Rihanna
Rihanna is officially the Queen of the Summer song.
Her biggest singles have always been released during the summer. "Pon De Replay" hit #2 during the summer of '05. Then the huge "SOS" became Rihanna's first chart-topper in '06. Then, let's not forget the behemoth that was "Umbrella" last year.
Well, summer has rolled around again. So, what song has the Queen delivered to her loyal subjects?
Ironically, "Disturbia" sounds like a song that should be played during Halloween parties (it probably will). The title alone denotes something sinister in the mix. The lyrics certainly don't lift that feeling. It sounds like Rihanna is in some kind of horror movie, completely with zombies and mind-control stuff. It's actually quite fun, and it only makes the mind wonder what the video will be like (graveyard? haunted house, maybe?). Even without the video, the song does exactly what happens to Rihanna in the song. The hook, the beat, and the bum-bum-bee-dum-bum-bum are all addictive and hypnotic, as if its goal is to drag you to the dance floor, against your will. Chances are, you won't be protesting too much.
While "Take A Bow" is just fine and all, Rihanna needs to realize that she excels in the dance-pop format, with songs like "Don't Stop The Music". You would think she would notice the pattern that her biggest hits (TAB excluded) were all upbeat summer smashes.
I expect Disturbia will follow suit.
Rating: 8.5/10
Download of the Day: Honorable Mentions 6/24/08
Heaven Sent by Keyshia Cole - I absolutely love this song. It has a gorgeous melody, great lyrics, and a great vocal performance from Keyshia Cole. It's criminal that Top 40 isn't playing this. Rating 9/10
When I Grow Up by Pussycat Dolls - As much as I stress the importance of good music, I can also indulge in some sexy, fluffy fun, and no one does it better than the Pussycat Dolls (Buttons in one of the hottest songs ever, IMO). "When I Grow Up" is fast and furious musically, never missing a beat, much like the song's singers. Rating: 6.5/10
I Luv Ur Girl by The-Dream - The man known for penning the monster smash "Umbrella" has put out his own album, with lead single "I Luv Ur Girl". Although not as clever as Rihanna's hit, it's still a cool, laid-back song about taking another man's girlfriend. Rating: 6.5/10
Introducing...Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Remember Ryan's post about anime? Well guess what, I enjoy it too. My favorite right now?
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.
The show surrounds Lelouch Lamperouge, a teenage exiled prince from the kingdom of Britannia. When he was a child, his mother was murdered and his little sister was left paraplegic and blind from trauma. After he confronted his father, the Emperor of Britannia, about his mother's assasination, he and his sister were exiled to Japan, known as Area 11 after it was conquered. Now, Lelouch has formed a group of rebels to fight against Britannia and liberate Area 11. He leads this rebellion disguised as "Zero", a terrorist. His strategic ability isn't the only thing that has made him a formidable threat. He has also been given the power of "Geass", a power that allows him to make others obey his any command without fail.
There is much more to the story than I can begin to describe, which makes it fascinating. Code Geass has created its own timeline, detailing the rise of the great kingdom of Britannia. The show also explicitly details the relationships of the Britannian Imperial Family, which is quite large. Then there are the other nations, like the Chinese Federation and the Euro Universe. The geopolitics discussed in the show nearly rival World Wars 1 and 2 in their complexity. All of these factors leave me waiting for every episode.
Honestly, Code Geass is one of the smartest programs I have ever watched, which is all the more baffling considering it is, for the most part, a cartoon. It is so well-written and amazing that I am glad that anime is the official genre. The term cartoon lessens the intelligence of the show, a mistake that should not be made.
If you live in the United States, you can watch Code Geass on Adult Swim at 1:00 am EST. I definitely recommend it.

TV Review: Camp Rock
Early on in my blogging career, I wanted to investigate what made Disney-related music, TV shows, and movies so insanely popular. It was one of the reasons why I decided to take my time reviewing Camp Rock, "starring" insanely popular teen sensation Jonas Brothers. I wanted to make sure I accurately criticized this TV movie.
After reading numerous reviews and watching the film live on ABC this past Saturday, I am ready to deliver my opinion of the latest DCOM.
Acting
Now, I wasn't expecting Oscar-worthy performances, but I was at least hoping for some kind of delivery that wouldn't have me rolling me eyes. Let's start with the leading male, Joe Jonas. The one thing I noticed was that his acting was really limited to scenes that didn't require a clear-cut emotion. I found myself rolling my eyes when he was playing angry in the limo or upset when he confronted Demi Lovato's character on her lies. However, things were much less awkward during the low-key scenes, like when Shane sang his song to Mitchie on the pier. He came off more natural and believable during those moments, and they were definitely more enjoyable. Demi Lovato, who played lead character Mitchie, was surprisingly good. Even though there were parts of her story that were absurd, I never once lost sympathy for her. It was probably that blinding smile, which flashed at least 200 times during the film. It's rather ironic that while her character pretended to be fake, Demi's portrayal was one of the realest of them all. The other notable was Alyson Stoner, who played Mitchie's friend Caitlyn. She played the cynical aspiring music producer very well, so well that I wondered why she didn't have the Disney package (album, TV show, her own movie). The other performances were subpar, at best (among the teen actors, anyway). Meaghan Jette Martin, who played Camp Rock bitch Tess Tyler, was pretty stale, often being upstaged by her co-stars. Her scene toward the end, when she ran backstage after messing up in front of her mother and started crying, was painfully bad. As for the other Jonases, I enjoyed Kevin's character the most, but I'm not sure whether that was the acting or the writing. Nick wasn't acting at all; his character was very serious and collected, much like his own personality. Not much of a stretch.
Writing
The movie, in my opinion, suffered immensely in this area. Whether it was the basic plot or the lines the characters spoke, the writing all seemed contrived and awkward. There were many holes and a lack of development that disrupted any enjoyment the movie could've delivered. For example, Peggy (Jasmine Richards) breaks free from the clutches of Tess and performs at Final Jam, eventually winning the whole thing. But where is her story? Why did she feel she wasn't good enough to go solo in the first place? Why did she let Tess (who really sucked) outshine her? I get the movie was focused on Mitchie, but there could've been a subplot about Peggy. Hell, it could've intertwined with the main story. It was these types of discrepancies that didn't exist in HSM that made the movie difficult to relate to if you were older than 15. It is surprising (and disappointing) that Julie Brown helped write this film, because it wasn't very smart.
Then there were the lines. I'm surprised that the actors were able to keep a straight face saying some of these things. Consider Shane's response to Mitchie saying she liked his song: "Wow, you really know how to make a guy feel better." It would've been okay if he was being sarcastic, but he was being sincere! Such an eye-rolling moment. To be fair though, there was some cool (even quite clever) writing in the film. Whoever wrote Kevin's lines deserves an award, because he was hilarious (again, either it was acting or writing, not sure which). By the middle of the movie, I wanted him to get that birdhouse!
The plot was rather formulaic (as noted in other reviews) and predictable. Mitchie, who's attending Camp Rock because her mom agreed to be a cook, lies about who she is to fit in. Her lies eventually catch up with her, just as she gets closer to bad boy popstar Shane Gray, who was sent to the camp to rehab his image. He gets inspired by a girl singing (Mitchie) to write music not typical of his band, Connect Three. He runs around the film trying to find her, never realizing that the girl he's been canoeing with or serenading on docks to was her. Anyway, things go sour when Mitchie's lies are revealed, and they get worse when Tess (the movie's Sharpay) sets her up for theft, which bans her from the Final Jam celebration. She does get to sing, and the song unites her and Shane in a really nice scene. At the end, they break in the "We're All In This Together" equivalent "We Rock". The story dripped in cheese and lacked any real substance, even with the Disney-typical "be yourself" theme. There wasn't much else to take away from the story, which was very disappointing. They could've elaborated more on the Shane wanting to expand his sound past the "stupid cookie-cutter popstar stuff" his label wants, but it stalled; another pot hole. It was if Disney was determined to make this film as uncomplicated as possible (maybe they're saving the real deepness for HSM 3?), not realizing how deeply affected the film. I'm not sure even the most die-hard JB fan would watch the film in film more than its three premieres.
SONGS
The most important part of Camp Rock was the music. There were a lot of songs, with a surprising variety of singers. First there was "Who I Will Be", song by Mitchie. I didn't real pay much attention to the song, since it was during the opening credits, plus there were more important songs she would sing. From the Jonas Brothers/Connect Three, there was "Play My Music", the song that was inspired by Mitchie's song. I can't call Disney crap on this one, it was actually pretty good. I was impressed, and when it comes to them and Disney, it takes a lot to get a positive reaction from me. it's the only song that could be released as a single unrelated to the movie. Shane's solo "Gotta Find You" will surely set JB lovers' iPods on fire for the next few months, thanks to a passionate delivery by Joe. "Too Cool", Tess' bitchy song was terrible, vocally and lyrically. Peggy's breakout song "Here I Am" was very nice, although her terrible pretend guitar playing was distracting.
Then, there was Mitchie's big song "This Is Me", which toward the end became a duet with Shane (a la Breaking Free from HSM). Demi Lovato's voice was fantastic in this song, although there were parts where I felt she was holding back. She definitely held her own against the Jonas, and their voices blended together extremely well. Yeah, the lyrics are a bit corny, but if you push that aside, it's actually a great song, best of the album.
OVERALL
With all of the hype surrounding the film, I was expecting something really good. Let's just say it fell below my expectations. Given the opportunity to make a really nice film to introduce two of Disney's rising talents (less JB, since they're already huge), they decided to pull out a predictable storyline with little substance or relevance to anything. Although some of the songs were nice and the acting was bearable, it couldn't outweigh the sher mediocrity of the movie. It's a shame really, considering how talented Demi Lovato is and how much money the Jonas Brothers have made Disney, you would think they would give them something to sink their teeth into. Oh well, considering a Camp Rock sequel is already in the works, maybe Disney will actually do it right.

The Amy Winehouse Tragedy
Today, the chronicles of Amy Winehouse had a new chapter added to it when her father revealed that his extremely talented daughter had developed emphysema, a serious, irreversible lung disease that makes breathing very difficult. The cause of the tragic illness? Amy's crack use.
Mitch Winehouse told UK newspaper the Sunday Mirror of Amy's serious health issues, revealing his daughter only had 70% lung capacity and that her lungs were "gunked up" because of her repeated drug use. The doctors she spoke to told her that if she continued with her lifestyle, she would be confined to a wheelchair with a permanent oxygen mask to facilitate her breathing. The other possibility would be death.
Death. If one word should affect the 24-year old more, it should be that one.
What's even more shocking is that just February, she seemed to be getting things on track. She was in rehab, she had fixed her teeth, and she performed via satelite from London at the Grammys, where she picked up 5 awards. The Amy many saw accepting Record of the Year was grateful and happy one, running into the arms of her background singers after announcement was made in LA. It made you think that Winehouse was finally ready to clean up her act and do what she did best; sing.
Yet, here she is. Struck with emphysema, it seems like the party could very well be over for Amy Winehouse. If she continues with the drugs and the smoking and the rest of her unexplainably self-destructive behavior, she could be dead by the end of the year, if not sooner. Like Marvin Gaye and Kurt Cobain before her, music would be robbed of someone who could've been a visionary.
However, its not necessarily the end. Amy Winehouse could finally clean up her act, and although she may not be the way she was, she would still at least be alive. Despite her heavy crack use, I believe Winehouse still has something to say about the world she lives in.
Let's just hope she'll live long enough to sing it.

Download of the Day 6/20: "Hot N Cold" by Katy Perry
To follow up the success of her novelty single "I Kissed A Girl" (which is poised to go to #1 next week if Coldplay falls off the top), her presumed next single is this fun song, "Hot N Cold".
The song is about her boyfriend who is pretty much a jerk. He must be, if he can "PMS like a bitch", as she puts it. Her annoyance over her beau's fickle attitude is sung over synth beats, reminiscent of the 80's. The chorus is extremely bouncy, and the lyrics are catchy.
Katy Perry is the queen of fun pop. I love that she doesn't take herself too seriously, just having a good time. What's even better is that her songs are catchy without being juvenile or stupid (referencing homosexuality and menstruation in music takes some balls).
She is perfect for summer!

Video Premiere: Burnin' Up by the Jonas Brothers
The video has been
Aagin, I've got to admit, its a fun little video. My favorite little segment thing was when Nick was James Bond. Kevin's kung fu thing was alright, and Joe's Miami Vice thing was weird (Joe + moustache = not normal). I didn't release Big Rob (their bodyguard) was actually rapping on the song. That's interesting.
BTW, was that David Carradine during the kung-fu stuff (for the teenagers who read this and don't know what on earth I'm talking about, he's the old guy from the Uma Thurman movie Kill Bill)?

Song Review: Jonas Brothers' "Burnin' Up"
I never thought it was possible.
Here's the deal; I actually want to like the Jonas Brothers. They are obviously talented, they seem like nice, down-to-earth guys, and then there is the Nick Jonas diabetes connection. Unfortunately, I haven't like anything they've done. "SOS" and "Hold On" were annoying as hell and "When You Look Me In The Eyes"was beyond schmaltzy to the point of nausea. I previewed their platinum album and found nothing worth noting.
Now, I am someone who searches every avenue before writing something off as either unwatchable or unlistenable, so when I heard they were releasing a new single "Burnin' Up", I decided to wait for its release before I made my final judgment.
Admittedly, this song had a lot going against it. The last hit single titled "Burning Up" was Madonna in the 80s. Then there is the fact that the video is premiering after the premiere of "Camp Rock", which instantly threw up the "Disney pop" alert. I decided to push those stigmas aside and listen to the single. It premiered on Radio Disney today at 7:15pm EST. I missed it, but I guess those Jonas-crazed fans are pretty tech-saavy, because with a little digging, I found the song. I listened to it three times, checking for my criteria of a good song.
So, my verdict?
This is the first Jonas Brothers song I don't hate.
Let's start with the lyrics. I was honestly surprised to hear that the Jonas Brothers have grown as lyricists. The chorus is a clever metaphor, yet easy to quote ("I'm slippin' into the lava, and I'm trying to keep from going under"). I've always believed a good song never states its intentions out loud; make us think about the words. It's a large step up from the elementary lyrics of "S.O.S." and at least 20 steps up from any Disney-related song (We Rock and We're All In This Together come to mind)
Score one point for JB.
Next, there is the vocals. I am pleased to say that listening to Nick Jonas sing doesn't make me shudder in annoyance and a sliver of disgust. It sill bugs me, but his voice has gotten stronger, and that extremely annoying tone in his voice is beginning to soften. Joe also sounds good as well. Really, this is a lot to admit because less than six months ago, I couldn't even to listen to "S.O.S."
Another point for the three brothers.
The music itself. Again, the guys are growing past the teen-pop/rock sound of their last record to a more radio-friendly (and Brandon-friendly) sound. Yet, I can still see the Radio Disney appeal. The song is more melodic than their past uptempo songs, yet the guitar keeps it from entering the 1990s boyband era. I can actually see myself humming the tune when I am walking somewhere. It's not bad at all.
Another point for Jonas.
It's clear to see that the Jonas Brothers have grown since their last record. How could they not have? In that time, they've appeared on tons of TV shows, gone platinum, sold out concerts across America and Europe, and even starred in their own TV movie. What most impresses me about this song and them is that, despite all of the Disney support, they are not letting it prohibit them as artists. Is "Burnin' Up" amazing? No. Is it great? I wouldn't go that far either.
Is it a step in the right direction for the brothers? Yes.
If they keep growing musically, they may keep "burnin' up" the charts for a few more years.
So, I give Jonas Brothers' "Burnin' Up" the Brandon Lewis Seal of Approval.
Rating: 7/10
P.S. They should release an acoustic version of this song; I know it would be even better.
P.S.S. The single cover is HORRENDOUS.
BWU Hot 25 Update: Katy Perry Hits #1
Keyshia Cole and Miley Cyrus are the two highest chart debuts this week. Cole's "Heaven Sent" entered at #8, thanks to high chartings on the Song Play and Interest charts. "7 Things" by the Disney star charts at #10. Cyrus' top 10 placement primarily comes from a top 5 placing on the Interest chart. "7 Things" was a Download of the Day this week.
The largest drop comes from Chris Brown, whose song "Forever" falls down 13 spots to 25 after it fell off the Interest chart. Chris Brown does have a new entry on the chart though, "Take You Down" at #14.

Soap Stuff: The AMC/Beth Ehlers Mystery
Is she playing Liza Colby? Is she playing Hayley Santos?
Is she playing someone completely new?
Soap opera star Beth Ehlers, who for years played Harley Cooper on CBS soap Guiding Light, is coming to All My Children. However, almost no one knows what role she will be playing!
At first, she was supposed to be a recast of Hayley Santos, previously played by daytime talk star Kelly Ripa. However, the age would've been off. Then, Soap Opera Digest revealed that she would be playing Liza Colby, last seen in 2005 played by vet Marcy Walker. Those plans were squashed when Marcy Walker expressed interest in the role after she quit acting 3 years ago. Now, there are rumors she is playing a Iraqi soldier. WTF??
So, who is she playing?
There is only one thing certain; whoever she plays, she will somehow be connected with Jake Martin (played by former co-star Ricky Paull Goldin). When both were on Guiding Light, Gus and Harley were THE couple that made that show worth watching. There is no doubt that AMC execs will try to capitalize on that chemistry.
We will find out soon enough; Beth Ehlers comes to AMC next month!
Someone Has A Crush On Cheryl Cole.....

Besides a hot music career with Girls Aloud, a new job as judge of X-Factor, and being one of the most gorgeous women I've ever laid eyes on, its seems like Cheryl has a new admirer (besides me, lol)
Joe Jonas spoke to MTV UK about Cheryl Cole and Girls Aloud: "Oh my God, Cheryl Cole! All of Girls Aloud are beautiful but Cheryl is just like, wow!"
Down boy!
So, Cheryl, if you ever want make your cheating a-hole husband jealous (which you totally should because cheating on you is one of the dumbest things a human being could ever do), you could always ask out your labelmate (Jonas Brothers are signed to Fascination in the UK, which is home to Girls Aloud).
Coldplay Scores First US Chart Topper!

Chris Martin and friends should be popping open the corks tomorrow morning, when Billboard officially crowns "Viva La Vida" as a #1 single.
They revealed today that Coldplay's second single from the album Viva La Vida and Death and All His Friends topped the Hot 100 this week, making this their first ever US #1. Their highest-peaking single before was "Speed of Sound" at #8.
Considering that two versions of the single are in the iTunes Top 10 right now, they will likely hold onto that top spot for a second week.
Congrats Coldplay!

Lil' Wayne Sells 1 MILLION In ONE Week!
Lil' Wayne's much-anticipated record Tha Carter III has sold an astonishing 1,005,000 copies in its first week, blowing Kanye and 50's releases last year out of the water!
I may not necessarily love the guy, but I have to give respect where its due.
Congrats on FINALLY get that smash record.
According to many, Lil' Wayne is one of hip-hop's gifted performers.
Hell, if he can save it from the D4Ls and the Soulja Boys of the world, he has my seal of approval!

Canada LOVES New Kids On The Block!
Seriously, they love NKOTB up north.
Fans went wild for the recently-reunited group at the MuchMusic Video Awards yesterday, where they performed a medley of old hits and their new single, "Summertime".
What does it say when you receive a warmer reception from another country, instead of your hometown of Boston? (They performed at Boston Q Concert, and the audience wasn't really into it)
The two performances are below:

WORST: Vanessa Hudgens' "Sneakernight"
Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Gabriella in the extremely successful High School Musical movies, is continuing with her singing career after a dismal first record.
Before, she was just boring,
Now, she is just terrible beyond belief.
What were the execs at Hollywood Records thinking letting this stinking piece of crap out?
Just about everything in this song is bad, the music, the lyrics (about SNEAKERS!!), the singing, and the video (since when did squeaky clean Gabriella become all hip?).
Although I would suggest saving your eyes and ears, here it is:
Disney's 9 Most Racist Characters
Damn, I wish I came up with this list! Some genius decided to put together 9 of Disney's most racially insensitive cartoon characters. Save for Sebastian from The Little Mermaid and the crows from Dumbo, I am not familiar with any of these characters, which I am sure Disney is happy about. The legendary brand has long since been accused of racism and sexual undertones for years. It probably explains why they are so politically correct now (HSM's We're All In This Together, anyone?).
Here's the list: The 9 Most Racist Disney Characters
Greatest Scenes: Charles Spencer's Eulogy at Princess Diana's Funeral
At 5 years old, even I knew the significance of the funeral my mother woke me up to watch on September 6th.
The funeral of Princess Diana was one of the most watched events in world history, with a global audience of 2.5 billion. There were many moments during the funeral that were iconic and memorable. There was the image of Prince Charles, her sons William and Harry, her brother Charles Spencer, and Prince Philip walking behind the carriage carrying her body. There was Elton John, stoic in order to remain composed, singing for the first and only time Candle in the Wind 1997, which became the second best-selling song in the world.
But of all those moments, none was more emotional, stirring, chilling, and heartbreaking than the eulogy delivered by Charles Spencer, Diana's brother. His speech was both a tribute to the beloved princess and a thinly-veiled attack against the British Royal Family, who just days ago, refused to leave Balmoral to address the grievers, and the media who were blamed for her death. Nearly every line he spoke was quotable and truthful, whether he declared Diana the "most hunted person of the modern age" or explained that "she needed no royal title to continue to generate her particular brand of magic".
He asked those who tried to sanctify Diana not to, saying that doing so would limit her legacy. He described Diana as someone who was able to transcend race and class, while remaining British. He referenced rather bluntly Diana's battle with bulimia as an example of the vulnerability that allowed the world to connect with her. He criticized those who attempted to belittle the work she did. In an stinging attack against the royals, he promised William and Harry that he and their blood family would guide them in their lives.
When he ended the eulogy, the millions who lined the funeral route and watched the speech in Hyde Park applauded with such strength that mourners inside Westminster Abbey followed suit. With all of the comments, television specials, and tell-all books written about "The People's Princess", none will capture the essence of her like her brother's speech. No reports during that unprecedented week of mourning symbolized the feelings like her brother's speech.
Earl Spencer's eulogy, along with being one of the most memorable orations in history, was one of the most polarizing moments ever broadcast on television.
Download of the Day 6/15: "7 Things" by Miley Cyrus

I'm going to a special kind of hell.
I'm going to music hell, because I broke a cardinal role for any serious lover of music.
I don't hate "7 Things" by Miley Cyrus.
In fact, its the best song she has put out (not that its saying much).
After the inescapable "See You Again", Miley decided to switch things up just a bit for the release of her second solo album, Breakout. She continues with her attempt to break from the typical sound of cheesy, teenybopper pop. Instead, she tries her hand at a more complex musical composition.
Miley does something surprising with this song. During the verses, the music is guitar-driven, mellow, softer, reminiscent of Natalie Umbruglia's amazing "Torn". It even has a touch of country, an obvious influence being her father Billy Ray. Its this part of the song I enjoy the most. It suits her voice better and is much less annoying than anything she's put out in the past. If the entire song was based off of this sound, it would've been so much better.
However, that's not the case. Instead, she jumps into the chorus with that annoying-as-hell tween rock thing she's been cultivating with her TV role. It's very frantic, both vocally and musically, as Miley rushes through why she hates her ex. By the end of the chorus, though, she returns to the mellower part as she sings "You make me love you".
Lyrically, its a clever song, maybe even touching in a weird way. Unlike many Disney songs, it is sincere without being corny. The lyrics are also not ridiculous and childish, like "See You Again" and Vanessa Hudgens' deadful "Sneakernight". When you listen to the words of the chorus, you may not want to admit it, but you will find yourself identifying with at 4 of the 7 "things", especially the last one.
Although Miley still isn't the greatest singer on the planet, her voice is definitely sounding more mature, while maintaining that confidence and charisma that helped put her on the map. Her delivery is far more sophisticated, changing from soft and sympathetic to hard and kick-ass when the song requires it.
So fine, I admit. "7 Things" isn't dreadful. In fact, its pretty damn good for the extremely annoying, tabloid-filling, racy picture-taking Disney cash cow. It is the best song she has ever released, hands down, and its one of the best songs coming from her generation (including the aformentioned Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Jonas Brothers). If Miley were to follow the path with this sound and type of music, she might actually outlast her expected 3-year expiration date.
Now if only the tween could keep her clothes on long enough.

Classic Download of the Day 6/14: I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly
In "celebration" of R. Kelly's acquittal of his child porn charges, I have decided to feature one of his classics in a Download of the Day post.
Because of the current situation, I shied away from anything dirty, perverted, or downright kinky from sonngbook. Instead I chose one of his shining moments.
"I Believe I Can Fly" was R. Kelly's answer to those who believed he was nothing but a sex-crazed maniac (not that it wasn't true). In fact, this song was my introduction to R. Kelly. The song was the theme to the Michael Jordan movie Space Jam, a classic for me. I can't remember any mention of R. Kelly before this song, so I was unaware of his sex-drenched persona. All I knew was the man who sang one of the best inspirational songs of all time.
Although many balk at the idea of inspirational pop songs, Kelly never let the song cross the line into the world of schmaltz. The lyrics were real, detailing a person's rise from adversity to a strong belief in their self-worth and potential. Even when the song hits the chorus and the lyrics become very metaphoric (soaring, wings, etc.), it doesn't sound cheesy. It sounds uplifting.
Really, the song is an emotional rollercoaster, hitting its peak once the choir is brought in and R. Kelly lets is all loose vocally. To date, he has never put so much energy to singing than he did with this song. His voice was so full of passion and power, it was easy to tell how important this song was to him.
"I Believe I Can Fly" is the perfect song for graduations, weddings, and any other event that require a sense of wonder and belief. It's the perfect song to rejuvenate your own esteem when it begins to run out. It's the perfect song for a movie.
In fact, it's a perfect song overall.
Let's call a spade a spade; R. Kelly is insanely talented. So much so that its disappointing when his face is plastered on newspapers around the country detailing his perversions. There are times that I want to go back to 1996, when I only knew R. Kelly as the man who sang the song that helped build my confidence.
In his career, marred as its been by controversy, he has had many hits. There is no doubt in my mind, though, that "Fly" is his greatest achievement.

UK's Princess Eugenie Caught Naked Dancing On School Grounds
What do you do after a night of drinking with gal pals? Ask Princess Eugenie. Just don't follow the advice, especially if you have a claim to the most famous throne in the world. It's quite funny.
Back in the day, the antics of Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson causes a tidal wave of controversy to hit the royal family.
But they never did anything like their offspring.
No, you wouldn't catch the Princess of Wales in a Nazi uniform. Just like you wouldn't catch the Duchess of York running around her school naked as the day she was born.
That's exactly what happened to Sarah's daughter Eugenie, who is sixth in line to the British throne.
Princess Eugenie, daughter of Sarah and Prince Andrew, has gotten into trouble with the heads of her school for dancing around the grounds of Marlborough College, without any clothes. She was with a group of other girls who caused enough noise to wake a senior staff member with "their playful shrieks" as the Sun newspaper put it.
The reason for the midnight nude show? Drinking and stress from finals (or A-levels, as they are called across the pond). According to a pupil from the college, there is a lot of stress surrounding the A-levels and Eugenie and her friends decided to let their hair down.
Princess Eugenie's sister Princess Beatrice usually gets all of the tabloid attention. She is featured frequently in the tabloids and here in America, she's been featured on TV shows surrounding the royals.
Buckingham Palace had no comment. about the situation.
So, which was worse. Fergie sucking on some businessman's toes or Eugenie running around stark naked at midnight?
Song Review: "We Rock" by the Camp Rock Cast
High School Musical had the corny yet infectious "We're All In This Together". Grease had the great "We Go Together".
What does Camp Rock have?
"We Rock".
Therein lies my biggest problem with this song. With HSM, their ending song never pretended to be anything more than a cheesy Disney pop song about unity and dreams. With Camp Rock, their song title implies something edgier and cooler. I mean, it does feature the Jonas Brothers, the tween answer to Bon Jovi, right?
Wrong.
Save for some drums and guitar (I'm assuming provided by older Jonas Kevin), the song is ridiculously similar to "We're All In This Together". It's about following your dreams, being yourself, all of those Disney sentiments that make listening to any of their songs nearly impossible, unless you are under the age of 16. Don't get me wrong; I do enjoy sappy, sometimes cheesy music, but there is something so annoying about it, even if they are being sincere. At least with many of my favorite corny songs, the sentiments are layered in metaphors. With this song, it is so obvious that you can't help roll your eyes whenever they sing about how no one will bring them down (it's an actual lyric). Maybe if the song was more complex (both lyrically and musically), it would be a great song. Then again, Disney wants their songs to be simple enough for the kids to get, so that's a lost cause. Still, it couldn't have been impossible to let the Jonas Brothers tweak with the song a little bit to make it more, I don't know, better.
The saving grace of this song is Demi Lovato, the girl who co-stars with the mega-popular Jonas Brothers. Unlike Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale before her, Demi has a very strong voice. It really comes to life in the climax, where she pulls some vocal power notes never really heard on a Disney soundtrack. Like Miley Cyrus, she sings with the same kind of enthusiasm that will make Hannah Montana a billionaire brand. Essentially, Demi Lovato is the best thing to happen to Disney since, ironically, the Jonas Brothers.
To be honest, the song isn't very good. It lacks the innocence of "We're All In This Together" because of the rock tinge and misses the boat on being a great pop/rock song because of the elementary lyrics. That being said, the song is a nice intro for Demi, who I'm sure will be a pretty big music success for Disney.

Leona Lewis To Perform James Bond Theme
Leona is expected to record the official theme to the latest 007 film, Quantum of Solace. The latest Bond film, starring Daniel Craig, will be released in October in the UK and November in America.
The original singer was Amy Winehouse, who recorded a demo with superproducer Mark Ronson, but her numerous private issues took her out of the running. Beyonce has also been mentioned in regards to the film, but nothing was solidified.
The last hit Bond theme was Madonna's "Die Another Day". The song hit the top 5 in the UK and top 10 in the States.
My Favorite Scenes: Michael Jackson Performs at Motown 25
It is one of the greatest live performances of all time, by one of the greatest performers of all time.
Before child molestation trials, shocking amounts of plastic surgery, and other tabloid goings-on, Michael Jackson was just another pop star, prepping for the release of his sophomore solo effort on Epic Records. Unbeknownst to him and them rest of the world, this album would become the biggest in world history.
Before all of that, MJ appeared on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever with his brothers for a Jackson 5 reunion. Although he planned on attending, his stipulation for performing his old Motown hits was being able to perform new material. Berry Gordy, head of Motown, allowed it. After the Jackson 5 performance, Michael introduced the crazed audience and the world to Billie Jean, arguably his best single.
The Motown 25 was THE performance that put Michael Jackson on the map. He was electrifying, even though he didn't sing live. No one really cared, because Mike had the world hypnotized by his dancing. Speaking of dancing, it was this performance that had him debut the infamous Moonwalk move.
Pop music would never be the same after that night.
Michael's performance that night set the course for one of music's most legendary careers. Thriller sold more copies that any album in the world (106 million). His subsequent records all sold well. 13 of his singles topped the US charts, and countless more hit the top 10. Despite all his success, its been overshadowed by mas hysteria, brought on by his supernatural fame.
Stripping away everything else, there is no argument in the world that can suggest Michael Jackson is not one of the most important artists in history. He is a legend, and this performance helped solidify that fact.

It's War! Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue Duke It Out On X-Factor!
UK fans can expect some live catfights between Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole (in green) and Australian singer (and Kylie Minogue's sis) Dannii Minogue (in purple)The judge in particular is singer Dannii Minogue (notice how I just singer? lol). Backstage rumors suggest that Kylie Minogue's sister is none to happy with the presence of the younger, more successful star.
Sharon Osbourne, who quit over a salary dispute and allegedly bitter relations with Minogue, has gleefully supported Cheryl's role as her replacement, saying "I love her".
A production source told UK's Daily Mail: "Cheryl is younger and more beautiful than Dannii - and she has a much more successful career in music. 'She is also as mouthy as Sharon and doesn't mind making enemies. Dannii and Cheryl already have a history - expect the claws to be out - particularly over who is Simon Cowell's favourite."
Apparently, Dannii, who's had 9 UK Top Ten singles to Cheryl's 18 with Girls Aloud, has insulted her new co-judge in the past. In retaliation, Cheryl has blasted the Aussie for having too much plastic surgery.
The X-Factor is known for its public fighting between the judges, similar to American equivalent American Idol.
Thanks to YouTube, I get to see any and all drama that takes place.
If there is a battling between Cheryl and Dannii, then I am DEFINITELY on Team Cheryl!
An Interesting Read...
It's quite interesting, especially if you know her career.

The UK LOVES Coldplay....To The Tune of 154,000 Copies!
How many?
154,000 copies were sold, in ONE DAY!
There is NO way in hell this album isn't debuting at #1 on the UK Album Chart.
The album is released next week in America.
Ryan has written a review of the album, so check it out if you haven't read it. While you're doing that, make plans to buy the record. It's fantastic.
Coldplay – Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends Review
The album starts off with “Life in Technicolor”, which is a nice little song without any lyrics. Yet still, it does a good job at setting up the rest of the songs. Think of it as a sampler of what’s to come later on.
The next three songs are “Cemeteries of London”, “Lost!”, and “42” continue with picking up the album’s momentum. “Cemeteries of London” and “Lost?” are great to get lost in (particularly “Lost”… Funny, huh?) “42” has this somber feel to it and then switches to a more giddier sound.
The fifth track is actually a two in one – the first of its kind in this album. It starts off with “Lovers in Japan” and then switches over the “Reign of Love”. “Lovers in Japan” is a strong song - it’s far from being at all mellow. On the other hand, “Reign of Love” is calmer than its predecessor. It smoothes out the mood “Lovers in Japan” started and gives a nice end to the track.
Next up is “Yes” along with the hidden track “Chinese Sleep Chant”. “Yes” starts off with a bit of a drawn out melody (hard to say, but you’ll get it when you listen to it) but then changes directions in a very good way. “Chinese Sleep Chant” like the name implies features a sort of chanting voice for the vocals. The music behind it though is a very good rocky tune that is fun to listen to.
Afterwards are the two singles that have been released – “Viva la Vida” and “Violet Hill”. I, like Brandon, enjoyed “Violet Hill” but I think I gravitate more towards “Viva la Vida” for some reason. Who doesn’t like a song referring to the aftermath of a revolution? (Seriously, I would like an answer....)
“Strawberry Swing” is the 9th track and one of my favorites. There is just something about it – maybe it’s in the fairly upswing-ish way it makes me feel as I listen. I can’t say that it’s truly upbeat or anything, but it is definitely one of the more higher tempo songs you’ll find here.
And finally we conclude with the double track “Death and All His Friends” and “The Escapist”. “Death and All His Friends” starts with a catchy tune from a piano, and then after a while adds a whole array of sounds for a great climax. I still walk down the street repeating, “I don’t wanna follow Death and all of his friends!” “The Escapist” ends the album in a similar way that it began – a dreamy like beat with very limited lyrics.
I would personally suggest heading on down to the iTunes store or wherever you download your music and getting it when it’s released. I’ve noticed that after a day or two of continually listing to it, it grew on me. Going along with Coldplay on their latest musical adventure was quite enjoyable and I, for one, am looking forward of whatever else they have in store.
Note: With the iTunes download you get two bonus tracks, acoustic versions of both “Lost” and “Lovers in Japan”. They sounded really nice acoustic, but I still love their original renderings.
Favs: “Lost”, “Strawberry Swing”, “Lovers in Japan”, “Viva la Vida”, and “Death and All his Friends”
R.Kelly Is Acquitted Of All Charges in Child Porn Case

Hell, even if you have a video of you committing a crime, you can still get off scot-free!
R&B
What's even more shocking than the verdit. According to TMZ.com, the jury BELIEVED it was him on the tape. The reason for acquittal? The victim Kelly's yellow stream of love refused to testify and cooperate, leading the jurors to call lack of evidence, preventing the rightful guilty verdict.
OK. If Michael Jackson's career had to suffer because of his trial (which had little to no evidence proving him guilty), then so does R. Kelly's. For god's sake, he was acquitted on a freakin' technicality! Don't get me wrong; R.Kelly has made some great music in the past, but this is just so stupid crap.
IF there is any justice, there will be no more "bump n' grind"in for the Pied Piper of R&B.
Katherine Heigl Labeled Ingrate In Emmy Battle
Katherine Heigl is in hot water with the producers of the hit ABC series after making disparaging remarks about her character's role and the lack of quality material she receives.
When asked about her absence from the Emmy nomination list, she released a statement through publicist saying "I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination".
The remark has apparently infuriated the suits over at ABC. An insider at the show told EW that the studio worked hard to accommodate the star's burgeoning film schedule, and was stunned by the insinuation that the show gave her low-quality material. The insider went on to call her comments "an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place."
Although Heigl is right about her character's direction (I did not like Izzie this year at all), it does appear pompous to criticize the show that put you on the map. She could've said it in a way that didn't make the show look bad. It seems like, now that she has had some movie success, she can begin talking slick about her steady job.
ABC proved with Isiah Washington that they aren't afraid to dump actors. I think Katherine Heigl should be careful. Let's not forget David Caruso/NYPD fiasco.

BWU Hot 25: Rihanna Remains On Top; Katy Perry Soars
Rihanna remains on top of the chart with "Disturbia", although my interest in the song is waning. I wouldn't expect another week at #1 for the Bajan pop star.
Interest did help Katy Perry, whose hit single "I Kissed A Girl" flew up 10 spots to #6. An appearance on CW11's 11 o'clock news and her Top 5 placement on the Hot 100 helped really pique my interest in the song. Its gaining more plays on my iPod, so it will continue moving up next week.
Another big jump is also responsible to interest; Lil' Wayne's "Lollipop". I originally despised the song, but thanks to my iPod Radio Remote and Miss Jones on Hot 97, I have begun to kinda sorta like it. Also, news that Wayne's new album Tha Carter III may sell over 900,000 copies this week has really got me re-examining my disinterest in the "greatest rapper alive".
Following Rihanna at #2 is Coldplay's "Viva La Vida", which is becoming a must-play for me. Plus, I have heard parts of their upcoming album, and its looking to be VERY good.
The highest debut is Solange's "I Decided" at #4. She was chosen as "Download of the Day" this week, and her song (and video) are one of my favorites so far this month.
Wanna see the whole chart (like who had the biggest drop)?

Hot 100 Preview: Lil' Wayne Scores Another Week at #1, Coldplay Hits New Peak
Coldplay, the week before their album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends is released, is expected to hit a new peak with their second single "Viva La Vida". The song, which propelled to success through ads for Apple, is expected to go to #2, making Coldplay's highest peak yet. Their previous peak was at #8 with "Speed of Sound".
More chart news will come once the Hot 100 is released.
I'm Back (For Real)!
I, Brandon Lewis, am returning to blogging. I still have a lot of stuff on my plate, but I missed blogging WAY too much.
I will definitely try to make up for lost time.
Download of the Day 6/11: Robin Thicke's Magic
It's been awhile since we've heard anything from blue-eyed soul singer Robin Thicke, who set bedrooms ablaze with the sultry (and a bit dirty) "Lost Without U". His new album, Something Else, is due out in September, and instead of bringing out some more of what put him on the map, he is switching it up.
"Magic", his first single, mixes contemporary R&B and jazz to make a very different sound. In a world where every second of music could be digitally created and/or altered, this song sticks to the basics; strong vocals and real instruments. There are a lot of those, ranging from piano to conga drums. The sound the varying instruments make is quite cool and laid-back. It's pretty easy to find yourself chilling out to this record. Vocally, Robin switches the whispers of "Lost" and pulls out the full voice, which is very good.
My only gripe is the repetitive lyrics. I know the song is titled Magic, but he repeats the word a lot of times. It's as if he's extending the chorus in order to hide the lack of verses. He wouldn't be the first to do this, but considering how awesome "The Evolution of Robin Thicke" was, it seems just a tad lazy.
Other than that, its a solid single that will probably get him another #1 on the R&B charts. It's still better than what most R&B artists are putting out.

Cheryl Cole To Be X-Factor Judge!
Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole has joined on as a judge for the UK's X-Factor, replacing Sharon Osbourne.
For Americans who aren't familiar with the show, X-Factor is the reality competition that launched the career of Leona Lewis. Simon Cowell produces the show and is also a judge.
Congrats to Cheryl!

Download of the Day 6/8: Solange's "I Decided"
Like many people, I only knew Solange through her megastar sister Beyonce, and that is who we focused on. I didn't even know that Solange released an album until just recently.
Well, if this song is any indication, then it looks like Solange can finally step out of her sister's shadow.
Solange already gets points over Beyonce for creativity. This song is like nothing else on the radio, which is quite exciting. It's like a throwback to the 60's while sounding very contemporary. I was impressed by the sound she is trying to cultivate. I was also impressed by her voice, which is also nothing like Beyonce. Hers is a bit more distinctive and even has a touch more soul than her sister (not to say that Beyonce can't blow a song out of the water).
What really makes this song awesome is the video. It is probably one of the best music videos I have seen in years. The video is like a timeline, showing Solange in different music eras. Its hyper-creative, with little clips of historical events and cool cinematography. I hate to compare again, but Beyonce NEVER did this!
With this single, I may consider checking out Solange's sophomore effort. I think its great that she is willing to look outside the box to differentiate herself from the rest.

Why Anime should be given a chance
This is not to say that I am in anyway one of those blatant fans ("otaku" in our lingo…) who over do it and gives the rest of us a bad name. I am merely just someone who loves a well-done show, full with characters that I can grow to love and respect (and even hate for that matter). I feel that anime does and can provide all of these things and more.
Anime and those who like it usually get a very bad wrap. There seems to be those that have this misconception that everyone who watch anime goes around with Naruto headbands and yells out random phrases in incorrect Japanese, trying to imitate their favorite characters. Those that treat Japan as their all powerful motherland – promising themselves to make a visit there at least once in their lives. And trust me, I’ve met people like this. I quite frankly loathe their very existence. I do believe that it is that type of behavior that turns off any prospective viewers such as some of you all from even letting the thought of watching an anime show pass your mind.
But one should not let this get in their way. There are many anime series out there that can give you everything you can find in our good old American shows, just in a different package. You want violence? It’s there. You want romance? Yup, that’s around as well. How about a compelling storyline? Oh yea. There are even some trippy ones that will leave you wanting more and questioning your own thoughts and belief on life.
Plus, right now is the summer. That means more and more crappy reality shows. While there are ones that you can get a kick out of, you must admit that there is a limit of how much one can take of them. The summer is therefore the perfect time to sit and at least try watching an anime show. It really just might surprise you. I can still remember the first true anime show that I ever really got into. That show was Cowboy Bebop and it still maintains a special place in my TV loving heart. And why is that, you may ask? It's because that show within its 26 episode run just simply made me fall in love with the characters. The first episodes introduced the viewers to 4 main characters, colorful and amusing in nature. But then, as the story unfolded, you became attached. So much so that has everyone departs within the last 3 or so episodes, concluding with all so perfectly fitting demise of the main character, as sad as it was. That damned song they featured afterwards added insult to the injury of my already grief ridden mind, providing the final confirmation that at last he had at last escaped a world he felt asleep in. And then, after all of that, if you’re really the observant type, you begin to see how it all pieced together and how much purgatorial philosophy was embedded into the series. But like I said, only if you’re willing to spend that much time and effort into your alone time with your TV.
Now that I’m done with my little rant, get out there and poke around. Expose yourself to something new, even if you do think that the idea of watching a cartoon immature and childish cause trust me. If you give it a try and don’t like it then fine, you don’t like it. But how can you know if you never open up to the idea, hmm?
Now I’m interested in know what have been your experiences with anime (including those that never had one). I want to see what people think about all of this, so sound off in the comments.
UNBelievable: Gossip Girl Star To Release An Album!
Why???
Leighton Meester, who plays evil bitch (and my favorite character) Blair on CW's Gossip Girl, is reportedly working on a pop album!
New York Magazine reported that Meester revealed her pop star plans to press in Canada. It is supposed to be completed in a few months.
WHY???
Hasn't she learned from Scarlet Johansson, Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, Heidi Montag, hell even Eddie Murphy?
Actors DO NOT make good pop stars!
Tyler loved her.
